Hey guys, I'm about to get my top swap done. I'm at a point where I will incur minimal cost to use a Gen V. Right now I have a P&P ZZP Gen III with an accompanying S2 IC/S2 FMHE under my bed waiting. I am patient so time is not a factor for me as far as the overall build goes.

My question is "is the switch from a P&P'd/IC'd Gen III to a Gen V (no IC yet) worth it, not just the short game, long term too." Pros and cons welcome.

    TIA,
    Slim

Its a Gen 3 core, I was thinking I'd have to switch cores. Is there a way to mod it reliably? I'd rather even do that! How?!

You can just throw it on there. Plenty of people do it

You'll be better off just sticking with the GenIII.
From the sound of it, you don't even have a cam.

I have rockers to float me until its cam'd next year. A list of mods may help I guess.

YT 1.9 for the mean time, k&n, LQ4 MAF, N* TB, P&P Gen 3 blower (thinking of converting to a 5), ZZP modified fuel rails, 60# FI, S2IC, S2 FMHE, P&P LIM, P&P heads (comp cam locks, viton seals, SS valves, 1.9" enlarged intake valve), LS7 lifters, ZZP SS headers, 3" catless DP, oil volume kit, alt rewire, voltage booster (S2), fuel pump rewire. I think that is it.

I'm still debating a VS cam, XPZ cam, or the Intense S1X cam. That would be about a year out. This project has taken awhile to get together but I'm ready to get rolling. Hope that helps.

plan for the cam sooner if your patient like you said. cause you may need head work depending on what cam you use, going big will need some work done.

and why go and tear the lim off 2 times when you can do it all when your down to a stripped block? i vote save up for the cam, sell the rockers. install cam at time of top swap. get it tuned. and your done with tearing into it.

That was my first thought but I'm not decided yet (may never). As far as a "big" cam, not going to happen, this is a DD.

Back on subject, P&P Gen 3 or Gen 5? I'll look more into using the IC on the Gen 5. Anyone know if the bolt pattern is the same? I assumed it was different, and that's why I assumed I couldn't use the gen 3 core on a gen 5 blower.

They bolt up the exact same. You'll need one different bolt and the gen 5 opening is a little bigger on the passenger side.

if you have the option go with the genV hands down. All in all its just going to be better for you in the long run and bolts right up to a genIII IC core (trust me, Id know). The fact that you dont have a cam in it yet is simply irrelevant, especially if you plan on doing it eventually...

I would do the Gen V get an IC from the guy on here who makes them. I have both and no cam.

Superb write up/comparison of the two superchargers over on CGP.
Read that and decide for yourself if it's worth it for you.

I would take the information in that thread with a HUGE grain of salt. The OP is a self proclaimed expert in just about everything.

Plus... non of that info is really new.... ( I do like how he bashes Nicks modding thread though lol ) But, given the OPs mod list, he will more than likely be sub 3.0 on that genV where he WILL see the gains. Also, (unless I missed it) there is no mention of the much improved inlet of the genV to the genIII which will come into play at those pulley sizes aswell.

^^^ Exactly!!! IF you do not plan on running a 3.0 pulley or smaller, stick with what you have. Gen V's open up with smaller pulleys..

    I was thinking I would break it in with a 3.6 for a thousand miles ish, use a 3.0 until I feel like I want/need a 2.8. I forgot to mention but I'll likely (90% sure) be running E85.

If knock free, 2.8, here I come!

If you can get the genv for nothing go for it. If your paying more than 200 bucks for it, spend that money on an xp.

For you guys running the gen 3 IC and gen 5 blower, did you have any hood clearance issues or is that l32 specific?
