Thread: Where Should I Hook Into Turn Signal?

I can't get there from my current location. Go to the12volt.com and find the section on relays. Look for a 5 pin relay. Typically a relay is used as a switch. The way a relay works is there is an actuator built into it, aka the switch (pins 85 and 86). When that actuator gets power and ground, it clicks and supplys whatever input (pin 30) you've give the relay to the 87 pin. Without power and ground both, the relay will let whatever your input (pin 30) is to flow through to pin 87a.

This means that if you:
Take the interior light power wire and put it to pin 30 (input) of the relay, this is your input or supply for the puddle and projector.
Take your door trigger and connect to pin 86 (pins 85 and 86 one needs to be power and one needs to be ground, doesn't matter which is which, 12volt might have them backwards to what I list)
If the door trigger is a ground, then give Pin 85 power. If it's power then give it a ground. You must supply the opposite of pin 86.
Now for the outputs. Pin 30 will automatically flow through the relay to pin 87a without the relay being actuated by power and ground. Connect 87A to your puddle light.
Now connect 87 to your projector. When the relay is actuated by the door trigger, pin 30 will be connected to 87.

This sounds way more confusing than it is..which is why I suggest a minute of reading on 12volt.

Does this look right?

Sorry I didnt see your post before I posted up my diagram thinger. Thanks I will check into it some more but I think that I have it now. Makes alot of sense now and seems really easy too.

Will I need to do one relay for each side or can I run them both from just one?

Awesome dude can u take a few more pics of this different angle? I saw those for sale and couldn't get myself to buy them until I saw them mounted

I'll either hook them to the outside vehicle illumination circuit (when unlock is pressed at dark reverse and fog lights come on) or a door trigger and timer relay. I'll build my puddle lights into the bottom of the mirror not door.

Does the exterior illuminiation stuff turn off when door is opened or when key is turned in ign? I'd only use it if it keeps things lit after door is open. You know.. projection is key!

Yup it's an adjustable time from the dic. If I set it for 30sec for ex. it stays on until timeout.

Key to ignition shuts them off inside that time frame.

Okay, it just dawned on me that anytime my amber corners are on the signals in the mirrors will be on as well wont they?

And would it be best to run a relay in the driver door and then probably one in the passenger door right?

If you get the right wire, anytime the blink happens, the led turn signal would light. I'm not 100% sure which amber you are talking about. I don't think you guys have any cornering light.

One relay would probably work fine, two relays also shouldn't change anything.

I mean like when the parking lights are on or the headlights. The corner lights are always on at that point.

And with the 2 relays I was thinking that it would allow the passenger puddle light to remain on until that door was opened. I thought maybe it would be better that way. And also I was reading something on the 12 volt about using diodes if I am cutting into the door trigger (alarm) wire. What are your thoughts on that? Could I get by without them with no problems?

I'd likely go to the interior lighting circuit instead. That way whenever it's on ..you either have puddle or the pontiac.

On the diode, you shouldn't need them for the relay. A diode merely blocks any signal from being pushed back into the circuit you tapped into.

Not necessarily...I did some fender well turn signals and their only on when the front signals are flashing. U just have to splice into the correct wire...there's three if I remember correctly black is ground and I don't remember the rest

Wow. Okay. lol. That makes alot more sense now. For some reason I was thinking there was only 2 wires going in. Pretty sure you are correct on that. I will figure out which ones I need to tap into. Hopefully will find a spot right inside the car I can tap into. Save me some wiring work.

I could also check which one I used today since my new fogs should be in...I'll be pulling the headlights out...if u don't figure it out first

Alright just a little update on where I ended up hooking the turn signals up on the mirrors I just finished. I used the signal wire for the green arrow in the dash for each the left and right turn signals. The light blue in the plug on the right side of the cluster after you fold it down (Behind spedometer) is the driver side signal. The dark blue is the passenger side signal. I will be making a how to and posting a link here on how to make turn signal mirrors with puddle lights that will include the wiring of the mirrors. This will be helpful to those of you who may have purchased turn signal mirrors and need to hook them up. Or if you are feeling up to it you can make your own.
