'98 GP SE sedan, 3.1L is what I have, and here's what I was thinking: Magnaflow 91006 high flow cat 2.5" I/O (good for up to 4.2L displacement [EPA] and 4.0L displacement [CARB]), Aero Turbine AT2525XL resonated center muffler 2.5" I/O, 2.5" to 2" Y-pipe, dual 2" runs to Tanabe Medallion touring mufflers. I'm not looking for significant power/mileage gains, or for idiotic neighbor-waking noise; I just want a little more sound with a deeper note. Does anybody think this setup will get me what I'm looking for, and if not; why? I heard a very similar setup on a 300zx recently, and was pretty impressed with the mellow--yet menacing--sound it produced. I'd appreciate any input you guys can give--yay or nay--but, since this is my first thread, please try to be nice if you can!

I use magnaflows on my 3800 stuff.. does a decent job of keeping things tame around town, and a good noise when you are on it.

i dont think the cat will change the sound much if you leave the resonator on.
keep the stock cat, keep the stock res (for now) and then just try the mufflers.
if you still want more loud, then move on to the res. either take it out and put it straight pipe or get a glasspack.

@ctracer: I thought about keeping the stock cat and res, but they're the original units; and will both need replacing sooner or later. If for about the same $ as OEM pieces, I can get something that breathes a bit better; wouldn't it be better to go ahead and do so? The thing is, I don't really want loud, I just want a bit loud-ER, you know? I'm shooting for more of a bassy rumble than anything else.

@darkhorizon: I know Magnaflows are good, and I'm not against using them; I just really want to try something not many others have. As long as a particular muffler gets me the sound I'm looking for, I could really care less where it's made...

Thanks for your input, guys! Anybody else?

Why though? Its a 3.1 SE. Even if you got the perfect exhaust setup and made it sound decent it would still always be slow as long as its the 3.1. Spend that money on a 3800 swap?

    Not your car.

    Doesn't really matter.

    3100/3400 sound worlds better than a 3800.

@Max: I thought I already said I'm not looking for significant performance gains...and I don't know about you, but I don't have the cash for an engine swap burning a hole in my pocket! Also, I have no intention, desire, or inclination to do an engine swap! Please try to keep any comments on point here, this thread is about what I have in mind for my EXHAUST, and nothing more. And by the way, yours might be a "better" idea...but it's a whole lot more expensive; for something I don't even want.

You say Tenabe Medallion style mfflers...like this?

Also, the factory catback, even single outlet...isn't restrictive at all...so if sound is all you're after, I'd just have that high-flow cat welded in, put a long glasspack in place of the factory resonator...at least 26"~...and whatever muffler you want to use...

If you do want the dual setup outback...do it right...with a dual outlet rear bumper...GT bumpers/sideskirts, then you'll be able to use a dual outlet setup correctly...and not have it all hanging there with the SE bumper.

If you do end up wanting a little more performance, making an intake is super easy, just slapping a cone filter on the end of the MAF sensor...and Milzy Motorsports makes a few things for you as well.

@blueguy91 Yeah, those look about right. I already looked into a set of GT bumpers, too; just because (1) I hate the SE nose, and (2) both of my original bumpers are looking a bit the worse for wear. As far as the glasspack goes, my understanding is that the brand doesn't really make much difference; but is there something wrong with the Aero muffler that I don't know about? Also, I already have a 3" smooth-bore intake my late brother fabricated back when I first got the car, so that half of the intake/exhaust equation is taken care of.

I'll be sure to check out Milzy when I get a chance, thanks for that.

Right; glasspack brand doesn't matter...just figure the longer it is, the more resonance taken out of the noise equation.

I've never used/heard an Aero muffler, so I can't say anything postitive or negative about it...

Dynomax Super Turbo's, Borla, SLP, Corsa...all are great, quiet~ish, toned mufflers. Basically you want to stay away from anything that's chambered/straight through design...Thrush, Flowmaster, Glasspack's (as a muffler, not a res.), Jones Super's, etc.

I agree. I think the 3100 has some capabilities within it. You just have to research what works best and not overdue it! I am modding my 3.1 and have been told by a lot of people that I will see some gains. It wont be throwing on another 30 horses but it will make a difference.
