Hello my wife crashed into a snow bank and the airbags went off..you cant even tell she hit anything very minor paint cracks...anyway i am a mechanic and ive replaced alot of airbag systems in my day just did a 98 sunfire last week..

So far i have got both the air bags and the srs module located under the front passenger seat but i cant find the impact/crash sensor i know where there typically at and i know what they look like.but I have completely ripped off everything in the front and there dosent seem to be one in front??I dont want to start ripping the dashboard and seat out and start putting the new stuff in untill i know the bags wont re-deploy.

any help would be greatly appreciated I need this car to be safe for my wife and kids thanks!

Im not sure this is just a guess and may work. Why dont you take the deployed air bags out and check the harness they plug into with a test light to see if they are getting power, so you know if something is pressed up against the sensor. I dont think they will re-deploy because there seems to be no major body damage. Maybe the impact was just hard enough to trigger that sensor for that air bag to deploy. I think you should be okay and that the air bag should not go off again. Best of luck to you!

I've never found one on a GP/w body car either. Haven't gone looking for the schematic/info though. There's a guy with a screen name Marine and some numbers on here who has the manuals and offered to look stuff up. Post in his thread and see if he can give you the info.

like i said, you can get the air bag module re set, so the sensor must be inside that. and you have a new one.

install it all and see where it gets ya...

Just to update this to help anyone else that's has this problem..there is no front impact sensor.not sure if there's a rear..

Unhook your battery for 10 mins then press on the brake to ensure there's nothing built up.

Start with drivers side bag lots of writes ups on that so I won't get into that.
    then the passenger bag
    then the module
If you start you have to finish before you can connect the battery and drive your car!!

The dash pretty much has to come out to get at the passenger side bag ... Not completly taken out of the car but might as well be lol..but I was able to get it in and out without removing it completely out..

And most likely you will have to replace the cover that is on top of the passenger bag because they get bent and won't sit flush with the rest of your dash..replace this when you have the dash already taken apart because it's the only way to put the two clips in that hold the front of that plate down.be careful with the rubber tabs they break quite easy..it's 4 10 mm bolts that hold the bag in place and 4hold the plate in back.

The srs module is under the pass seat you will have to remove the seat..
Unclip the springs from the back of the seat
Remove 2 bolts in the back
Remove the two in the front that hold the springs
    Remove headrest of seat
Push the seat from the back to tilt it forward there's a grooves in the front it's sits in..it will wiggle out

You will see a square bulge in the carpet I took a razor blade and cut out 3 sides around it and folded up the carpet..be care you dont go to deep and cut the harness..you can remove the entire carpet if you prefer lol..my ways a lot faster and you'll never see it.

The srs module is the impact sensor also well at least for the front. Instead of paying ridiculous amounts of money getting a new one or having it flashed by a dealer or sending it somewhere and having to wait just goto the junkyard. find a car that's not smashed and pull it ..I got the two air bags and srs module for $55 they threw in the cover for the dash.

AGAIN If you start you have to finish before you can connect the battery and drive your car!!

Need Info... My 2001 Grand Prix SE 3.1 V6 was recently totaled by insurance because of front end damage and airbags deployment. The car was in overall good condition and was only $400 to keep as salvage. So I was told by a body shop guy that he could fix parts and patch airbags for about $1,200.oo So I went for it and I understood that airbags would not be functional. It would be an extra car anyways. Since I live in California, I just found out the hard way by DMV sending me to CHP that before I can register the salvage, airbags need to be in good working condition! My problem now is that I keep getting mixed info about the airbag system. Does my car have front impact Sensors??? I'm trying to keep cost as low as possible. I found airbags and module used never deployed for $75 but they were unsure if the car had sensors or where they're located.... Can anyone Confirm?? does it have to be a professional that installs it?

it seems all there is, is the box under the front pass seat. and under the rug. as far as i can tell its the only sensor. its called the airbag module.

75 bucks for both bags and the module sounds like a steal.

Thanks for the reply Scotty.... I kinda told the bodyshop guy that there doesn't seem to be any sensors, he couldn't believe it and is gonna take the bumper off and look for them since everyother car he has seen has them. I just hope that since he's no certified airbag installer that after he installs them they don't go off and that they pass inspection by Highway Patrol.

if you google the airbag module, you'll find a few places that re set them, your old one is reusable, but used costs less.

seems the impact sensor is in that box. they seem to sell both air bags with the module a lot for these cars.
