Today my granny took her 1998 Grand Prix to Wally World and when she came out it started and ran for a few seconds and then died. Now it won't start at all.
I have read on here that there is a resistor on the fuel pump but no local parts house (ie Orielly Auto Parts) has one. They have a fuel pump relay. It this the same thing?

I think it's a 3.8 l. Not sure it's a fuel problem but it turns over but acts like no fire or fuel.

Try starting it with starting fluid

If its not a fuel problem check throttle body. On my 04 grand prix it would start right if I didn't push gas pedal when I turned key over...it would die if I didn't push gas

the 3.8L NA and 3.1L never had the resistor, rule that right out.
From the off position, turn the key and see if it starts. After it dies, turn the key totally off again and try again. If it restarts for a moment, then pay attention to the security light. Likely the car is pissed off at the key or chip in the key.

Car won't fire. I don't hear the fuel pump run when I turn the key to the on position either. Don't think this car has a chip in the key.

If you don't see the chip, then it's just higher up in the key where the black plastic is over it.
Sounds like a fuel pressure test is the first thing you need.

98 didn't have chip

Sprayed some starter fluid in intake tube and it fired right up. I guess the fuel pump has gone bad. Any other ideas?

Sounds like fp to me. Change the fuel filter while you are doing stuff.

Will do. New pump is supposed to be here at lunch today. Gonna swap to new filter as well.

Mine has no chip. I can use the valet key and drive it around no problem. I have no security light either.

This 1998 has no chip that I can see. Swapped the fuel pump and filter this afternoon and she fired up. Thanks for the tips you guys are great. Granny is back on the road.

Guys..there was theft protection on them. Take a read through your owners manuals.Just saying..now that the car is fixed..I can give you both a hard time.

I have a 97 and it has a chip (according to the dealer that is why the key in my wallet will open the door but not start the car
