The car is an 04' GTP. Last year I replaced my heater core that was dumping coolant into my passenger floorboard. With the help of people on here the daunting task was still a PITA but we navigated it well and completed the process. Everything has been as good as can be expected until the last week or so.

I first noticed the car starting to get "a little" warm...just registering higher than it usually does, but no where near danger. Then it started to creep up further and gave concern so we checked and it was low on water. Addition of water and it was fine. Next day, same thing and we thought it might be the thermostat and replaced it. Problem persisted again, took thermostat completely out to see what would happen. Over the weekend took a 2 hour (each way) trip and it was fine, yesterday fine, (temperature wise) and this morning GF leaves for school, makes it 4 or 5 miles down the road and the bells and whistles go off for overheating. I get there and have to add almost a full gallon of water to it, temp goes down and I am able to get it back home.

There isn't a visible leak that I can see, I've spent time watching it running and just sitting and I cannot find one. I don't see water on the ground after it's been sitting and I can't see anything spraying out of say a hose or something. What do you guys think? Do I need to replace the water pump or is there anything else that comes to mind.

As always input and knowledge is always very appreciated.

Water pump could be, occasionally it can cause problems, but likely it would be making a racket or it would be locked up and throwing belts. Not very often will it be the problem without showing signs. However...

Being an 04 it most likely still has the original LIM (Lower Intake Manifold) Gaskets which were a "plastic" with rubber seal design. Search for "lower intake manifold" and go crazy looking over the threads about it. Very common for the older models. There is a replacement, started in 05 for the L32, "problem solver" metal with rubber seal gasket that we recommend to change, it can cause this sort of problem.

You will need a small list of parts to replace it all. But all the info needed can be found by searching or looking through this thread. It even includes a 33 min video of how to change it and what all you will need.

Consider it could be something else, but we have encountered this many times. Look between the LIM and the heads, if its a black gasket you may want to consider doing this, if its aluminum I would think it may be another problem. The heads don't warp very often and the head gaskets are usually solid, so I wouldn't bet money on that. This would be a solid direction unless someone else has a better idea.

    Good Luck.

Thanks for the input. So I have done a little leg work. I filled completely With water and ran it til it finally got really hot...managed to find water leaking down from the bottom passenger side of the radiator...haven't taken anything apart yet but I'm sure this will be hell.
