Re: Window fog. How to get rid of?
Do you ever smell that "sweet" smell that resembles antifreeze when you turn on any of your climate controls? What I have found to be the case more times than not in this case is that there is a small leak in the heater core and your "steam" you are seeing is vaporized coolant residue. It is VERY annoying. I would recommend removing the lower duct work panels and inspecting your heater core box to see if there is residue from coolant.
I believe you will find your answer there...

***EDITED***
Please keep posts on topic. Thank you.
Re: Window fog. How to get rid of?
I use Rain-X anit fog on the inside of my windows, and normal RainX on the outside. I never have a problem.
Re: Window fog. How to get rid of?
You should get to the root of the problem instead of putting a band aid on it. If you get instant total fogging look at your heater core. when you leave your drive way your motor and coolant are cold aswell as the thermostat is closed forcing it to bypass. Shortly after you leave your driveway the motor warms up, thermostat opens and sends full volume of water through the heater core which has a leak in it, this results in steam in the cabin with no where to go but onto your windows. or your heater intake water defector has come dislogded unknown to you allowing water onto the passenger side floor, under the carpet and mat.
Sorry about the long post. hope this helps.
Re: Window fog. How to get rid of?
Lately with the cold weather, when I turn on my defroster all of my windows will fog up. Just started recently. We have been getting a lot of rain so I'm thinking the interior is damp and the car can't get rid of the moisture fast enough.. I hope its not the heater core.. where is that thread on replacing that drip shield?
Re: Window fog. How to get rid of?
My Ac should work fine. Worked great all summer. I don't think its that, but I guess it could be. No way for me to tell if thats it since it 35degrees outside.
I don't feel any water on the passenger side floorboard. Occasionaly I will get a musty smell, so maybe its leaking elsewhere.
I do not have the re-circ button on so that shouldn't be it unless the damper is not opening. How can I tell if the damper is opening?
I'm wondering if its the heater core, and will need to look closer.
Re: Window fog. How to get rid of?
I was thinking of trying BARS LEAK in my radiator to see if it will seal up any leaks I might have in my readiator core. If I have a leak.. What do you guys think? Which one should I use?
Re: Window fog. How to get rid of?
I suggest using a new heater core. I'm going through the same exact thing right now. Don't use any stop leak that stuff is only used for selling a sh*ty car. You can by pass the heater core. Get 3/4" heater hose and connect the inlet and outlet on your tensioner. If the fog goes away then you heater core is the problem.
Re: Window fog. How to get rid of?
DO NOT USE BARS LEAK!! It'll clog up your coolant system.
Re: Window fog. How to get rid of?
Ok guys I won't use it... I wish I knew for sure that was the problem.. I'm still not sure. I can tell you that my windows are fogging pretty bad and I have never experience this before. I don't have any water on floor board so I'm notsure what it is..
I have been topping off the coolant lately.. light would flicker, id top it off and it would stop flickering. In some time the light would come back on and id top it off again.. would I smell that sweet coolant smell in the summer? I thought I remebered smelling it then.. but not so much anymore.. by the way.. my lim and uim all were replaced about 6 months ago..
So what else can I do or look for? If it is the heater core, what is that ging to cost me? What else should I replace? Blower motor? ???
Re: Window fog. How to get rid of?
pull the carpet up and check if it dry underneath. the carpet has inches of foam under it and it can hold water, or coolant just fine, while hiding it. you need to pop the door sill molding up, and the front plastic kick panel to show the hooks the carpet is held on to at the edges.
you can also check the outside heater hoses, one of mine was all swollen and leaking down the outside of the firewall, and causing fogging of the windshield as well.
Re: Window fog. How to get rid of?
Thanks, ill try to do that this weekend. I am having severe fogging on all of my windows.. really bad. They are so fogged that water is dripping down. I have to open the windows to clear the fog.. is there anything else I can look for or at?
Re: Window fog. How to get rid of?
is the heat coming out of the vents hot? no heat at all will fog window pretty fast in the cold air.
if its hot id really lean in the heater core as the problem. they suck to change honestly,( but really it could be worse) but doing it your self is well worth it vs the price a shop will rape you with.
i will cost ya a afternoon. or less depending on your skill level. lots of small bolts to get to.
Re: Window fog. How to get rid of?
its hot.. really hot.. i have to open windows to cool off.. but still cant clear the fog. unfortunately I could not do it myself.. and will wind up paying through the nose... So if it is that. then what else should I replace? heater core, any recomendations on which one? I already have the hoses to the core should I do the blower motor?
Re: Window fog. How to get rid of?
heater core is just that, just that part needs to be changed. if you can build a model you can open this up and change it. your working with plastic parts the whole time till you get to the core. remove all the small bolts, pop a part off. its just uncomfortable to work at due to your on your back hanging out the door with a light next to your head so you can see, then get up and find the bolts on the other side, so its a back and fourth game for a few hours.
it "WILL" go back together faster and easier then it came apart, i guarantee it lol
Re: Window fog. How to get rid of?
Just like Scotty said
I did my 2004 a couple of months ago. Really not bad at all. I bought a Delphi from Amazon for like $70.00
Once you get going, everything seems to fall in place. Patience would be all you need, unless you have hundreds of dollars to throw around for a shop fix.
My windows were slimy fog before I did the repair, actually quite dangerous to drive.
