Ok guys here’s the scoop first off thank you for all the responses and well wishes. I called a Chrysler dealer today he agree to take the car but stated he is backed up and can’t look at it for 10 days. Called the tow guy and told him I wanted the car towed to the dealer he said he has no record or paperwork on the car. I said it is a white PT Cruiser; “Oh yeah we have that it just showed up in our yard, we have no record or idea of how it got here.” I explained how it got there he stated I needed to pay him up front for towing storage and diagnostics (which consisted of removing the radiator cap and looking in the filler neck. $55) first in cash. I told him I am 500 miles from him and we argued. Finally he agreed to take a discover card over the phone to the tune of $218.00 total for the tow, diags, and storage ($30 a day). But he would not tow it to dealer I called triple A and they arraigned for a tow truck from his place to the dealer. I plan on filing a complaint with the Mayor, Attorney general, asst attorney general and the police. Far as I am concerned this was carjacking and he has a long history of doing this. Am I allowed to list the name of the tow company on this forum to warn people? Will keep you posted what the problem was

If the car only has 28k on it, I would think it's almost definitely still under a powertrain warranty from Chrysler, no?

its a 2001 so the warrenty was 10 years or 100,000 miles I believe but I will check

Oh I didnt even look at the year of the vehicle, sorry.. yeah that's probably out by now... figures it does this 1 year after the warranty expires.
28k miles in 10 years, lol.. I put that on my gp in less than 3 years, but I guess that's normal for elderly owners.

Honestly, I'd cut my losses and help them find a new car. No offense to your parents, but the PT Cruisers weren't exactly high quality cars to begin with, and getting a new engine put in is going to cost you roughly about what the car is worth. If there was a guarantee that nothing else was going to go wrong with the car, it would be one thing, but considering things can, and being a PT Cruiser, probably WILL go wrong with it, I don't feel it would be worth it. The only way it would be cost effective would be if you can find a backyard mechanic to drop a known good used motor in it, but even then, given the circumstances (where the car is right now, trying to find someone trustworthy to do the labor, trying to find a trustworthy person/place to get the used motor from, being hundreds of miles away from where the engine was bought, thus making any warranty offered worthless, etc), I don't think it's feasible to go that route.

Well in truth they do not even need a car mom is 95 and they pulled her license due to her age dad is 92 and in a wheelchair they just like having a car in the driveway "JUST IN CASE" they have to go somewhere and whoever is taking them can not fit the wheelchair in there car or does not have a reliable car. I been trying to get them to just get rid of the car years ago. They really should not even be living alone but I can't convince them to sell there house and move in with me (I have 4.5 acres of land and offered to give them half for free if they sell there house and just use that money to build one on my property. They are firecly clinging to there indepence saying they are too old to move from n.y to tn.

yep take out that security panel and once you fold it up it fits back there nicely bungee cord it to the headrests of the back seat

i cant believe you're going through all that for that car. i'm glad you are in a financial situation where you can afford it cuz whether i could or not that car would be junked. really hope things benefit in your favor. good luck

Well the way I see it we still don't know whats wrong with it the tow guy said it needed an engine but all he did was pop the radiator cap. May just be a head and head. Depending on the price of a head job I was told that it's about $1,000 so that is vheaper than a whole new car and even if they go for the engine they can sell it for more than they paid to have it fixed \. Down here in Tn I seen PT cruisers 2001 thru 209 with $100,000 miles going for $9,000 which Ithink is insane but found a tone of them for that so 28,000 miles with a new engine should bring at least $7,000 Don't forget interior, body, struts etc are are all like new

Well just got word back it is the engine $5,700 with a 3 year 36,000 warranty its re-manufactured by Chrysler thanks to you all for the assist. I guess the good thing is they are stuck at my house until it is fixed so instead of 3 weeks I gt to see them for 8. I am happy about that at 95 I never know when I may not get to see them again, ya know I kept wishing for a way to make them stay longer. I think God is trying to give us all one more good family time

I'd love to but the car broke down in west viginia and we took a rental car to Cross plains tn where I live.

I would have called someone else to tow the car to a reputable mechanic and not paid this guy a dime. He provided you with no real value after picking up the car. He didn't tow it where he agreed to and was not authorized to do any work on it.
