Thread: Cleaning Coolant Tank

I'm doing a major cleaning of my car in a couple weekends. Trans fluid, filter, plugs, wires, fuel filter, oil pan and gasket, thermostat, and lastly a coolant flush and switch to Yellow Peak BUT, my coolant tank is dirty, like really bad. I cannot scrub the areas affected, so while I am doing the other work, is there anything, any solution, I could have the tank in to eat away at that dexcool gunk?

bleach it clean

I dumped a bunch if mean green in it and shook it up and let it sit overnight and it helped but didn't clean it totally. Bleach might be the ticket

Took my tank off, a water hose flush the inside, soaked it in simple green after a brake cleaner scrub down, lol, looked like NEW.

It looked new that is... until my axle started throwing greased, seems it'll need a new cleaning again soon.

Some of the junkyards are ridiculously high.
And i tried a hose and purple power. Not a lot better. But that was a while ago.

Cascade and hot water. Let it sit for about 30 minutes and rinse well.

Dawn, very hot water, shake violently... rinse and repeat

I did it in the bathtub though, so the nastiness would go down the drain and not into the ground... call me a tree hugging hippie but I dont want ethylene glycol or Dawn in my area's water supply or my soil.

No I understand completely.
Hopefully I can catch all my coolant as I drain it.

Wow, that sounds perfect. I have plenty of nuts and washers to try that with.

Hmm I've never had water turn red on me because it was so hot. Maybe it's a southern thing lol
