Like the title says its a 99 GTP and it does not start in nuetral only park. The only time it bothers me is when i get the car washed. I like to shut the engine off while it goes through the car wash.
TIA

bad or misadjusted neutral safety switch probably
I just replied to your PM but thought I would post this up here also for others to see.
Hi Nick, I need to know what year and model your car is to give you an exact answer, but if its a prix from 97-02 then the only effect on starting in different gear ranges would be the PRNDL switch located on the top of the transmission where the linkage hooks up. There is a heavy gauge Yellow wire that goes into it, this is straight from the "crank" output of your ignition switch. This wire is also part of a three wire plug on the drivers side strut tower. Test this wire with a test light or volt meter to make sure there is power there while trying to crank in neutral. If that checks out ok then you need to check the heavy gauge purple wire that is on the same connector on the PRNDL switch as the yellow wire, this is your starter feed wire. There should only be power in Park or Neutral positions, if nothing in neutral on the purple wire but there is on the yellow wire then you need to replace the switch or as mentioned above you could try to adjust it and see if it makes any change. There are two 13mm head bolts that hold it down and the holes on the switch are slotted to allow movement.
I will try to adjust first because the tranny was rebuilt a long time ago when i first got the car and i did notice the gear selector was off a bit but i did not feel it was bad enough to take it back. Perhaps they did not adjust the switch correctly either.
Thanks
Ok, i was bored this morning so i checked out the PRNDL switch. I could not back probe the purple wire on the connector (not enough room in cavity). So i did a pin out from the connector to the starter and hooked up my probe to the wire with the same continuity.
unplugged a couple of connectors going to the ignition module so the engine doesnt start.
In park i got voltage but in Neutral nothing for the purple wire. Yellow wire had 12V.
So i loosened both mounting bolts and adjusted the PRNDL switch away from me (from above in the engine bay), clockwise, keeping the forward bolt finger tight, and it made things worse at the shifter.
Then, i adjusted the switch towards me, counterclockwise, and bingo it started in neutral and the shifter lines up better now then before. Had issues finding reverse.
Finally, tightened both bolts and its done.
