Cars been sitting for about 5 months 1997 grand prix GT was running fine just have not used it kept meaning to go out and start it once a week but just got too busy well I plan on starting it and putting it back on the road in a few weeks, and tips (other than charge the battery), on starting it? or just crank it over? someone told me take the valve covers off and pour some oil in there, BTW the oil was changed just before I let her sit does not even have a 2,00 miles on it. tank was on e as well I figure maybe I had a gallon in it if that so stale gas is not a problem

she should be fine. My car sat for over a year before I bought it. Started right up when we Jumped it. Even more amazing is that after we charged the battery, It has been good ever since. Even after going dead and sitting through winter.

remove the fuel pump relay. ANd crank it over for like 10 seconds, do that a few times to let oil get all up in that motor. Plug the relay back in and be on your way.

Wow, I think you might have hit on most of the car storage myths. Let me just say that I have stored vehicles many times back in my military days. A couple times I had a car in storage for 7-9 months, and many other times varying from 1-3 months.

I can tell you for a fact the ONLY thing that needs to be done to store a car (for a year or less) is disconnect the battery. Some people go nuts doing things they believe help prevent something but it is just wasted effort. In fact, starting a car for no reason every week or so is like the worst thing you could do it.

So ya, just make sure the battery has a descent charge and for heaven sakes for some gas in it. Just start it up let it run for a minute or two, slowly cylce the tranny through all the gears, then baby it for the first trip or two and you're golden.

Thanks fiveingers and Cerick yeah I though it may be that easy just got nervous when I had let a van I had sit for about 16 months when I started it it sounded god awful and ran like crap for about 20 minutes I was worried I chipped a piston or something but it has been running since June now so I guess its ok, just wanted to be sure I wasn't just lucky in not chipping one and didn't want to mess up the grand prix

Every time you change your oil there is no oil in the top end of the engine once you remove the oil filter.

    The more you know?

    Yeah?

I figured I just say what I would do if my car had been sitting for a long ass time.

Well, for a 16 month storage I’d do a couple other things. But still not much really “needs” to be done. IMHO many people start these car based rumors just for something to do and their own amusement. You take a POS vehicle that runs for $hit( or basically has any number of underlying issues) and store it for a year, sure it might have a failure when you start it back up. Kind of reminds me of one of the biggest whoopers out there about how NOT changing your tranny fluid is a good idea. OMFG you got me started now.

In short, if it was going to break before, it still might now. But that fact has little to do with how much you obsess over it. The problem with most ppl is the obsession only comes after the damage has been done.
