I noticed about 2 years ago that I have a rattling sound coming from somewhere and I have tried everything to get rid of it. I have attempted several mech shops which include Midas, Monroe, personal friend's shop in KS, GM dealership in OH, and still no luck. In Oct 2011 my transmission completely died and I had a new transmission installed. The rattling is heard when going between 10 and 40 mph. I am sure it does it at fast speeds, however, you are not able to hear it. While driving during these rates of speed and when the car is put into neutral, the sounds goes away. While going these speeds and the car is slightly accelerated, the noise goes away but returns as soon as acceleration ceases.

I thought it was a transmission issue, but with a new transmission being put in, and the noise is still there... I'M PUZZLED.

Please... anybody with any ideas... please reply. At this point, I am ready to try anything. I am going to contact another GM dealer in GA to see what they say. After I get raped by the diag fee... they are going to tell me they don't know what it is... FML!

Thanks in advanced for everybody's help...

    Michael.

Well Michael, it obviously could be any of several items. But this one I’m going totally on personal experience and the fact that if it was easy I would hope someone would have found it for you by now.

I’ll spare you the long boring story and cut to the chase. There is a U-tube (IMO a cheap heat exchanger) that sits right on top of the front end sub-frame cross member. Well it is held in place by one cheesy azz clip. Secure it with tie wraps at both ends of the tube and see what happens to your noise.

If this works you totally owe me a beer

A cracked flex should have been found during a trans install and would/should have broken and caused more issues after two years.

Being a noise you hear and can repeat, that helps. Can you hear the rattling when the car is in park at all?
It would appear to be driveline related if you hear it as you describe and only putting in neutral/accelerating changes it.

I assume they've looked at axles, wheel bearings, sway bar/end links (which is very commonly sounding like you mention) and backing plates?
I drink..so consider that when reading my posts.

cerick08gp, I will have to get under there and take a look. I will get you a beer or 10 if that fixes it. Thanks for your input.

brian99sp, i would think that issue would have been found on new trans install as mentioned by billboost37.

billboost37, i have had all of these things checked... now if they were checked by people that knew what they were doing is another story... i am, unfortunately, less mechanically inclined than most, which is why i have my car taken to the shop... whereever that maybe. However, weel bearings have come up in conversation before... i might doa change on all four wheels and then see what happens.

Possibly the transmission rear dust cover installed incorrectly, resulting in the cover contacting the flexplate? This is just a suggestion, not a diagnosis. I encourage you to have the vehicle inspected by a certified technician.

    Please keep us posted.

gmcustsrvc, my gxp does not make any noise while in the parked position... I am thinking it is a torque rattle of somekind and might even possibly be as simple as the honey comb in the cat converter...
