My mechanic tells me he has traced the clunk or pop in the steering wheel of my 2004 GT when turning to the intermediate steering shaft. Anyone know the cost of this part and how many hours of labor to replace?

not sure how much a new one cost, but i swapped mine not to long ago. if you can get the car in the air you can do this yourself. you need to pull the rubber boot on the rack under the car, there's a 11 mm bolt remove it, and pry the shaft up and off the rack and pinion, then go under the dash at the bottom of the steering column there's the top of the same boot. pop that off and push it down, remove the 11 mm bolt there, and its out. took about 1 hour to do, dropping the cradle a few inches does help too, thats 2 18 mm bolts, you just put a jack under the middle of the frame, loosen the bolts and lower the frame down, leave the cradle on the jack, don't hang it on the lose bolts.
There's a grease fix for this too. Should cost like 16 bucks at your dealer. Remove shaft, grease with grease kit, and re-install. Did this on my 04 GTP and haven't had a problem in 40k miles.
Thanks. I had the mechanic to replace it. Shaft cost $103 (aftermarket), $80 labor.
