Okay so then we ended up jumping it, and it started up....drove it around for 5 mins, and now it will fire up no problem....the battery is 5 years old, so i understand it could be that.

but why would it fire up right away this morning and then once it was turned off, it had no power and the key would not release.

    any ideas?

The key not releasing could be a bad park sensor. My key often won't come out, so I'll shift it out of park, then back into park and the key releases. It's not a big deal, and it's the last thing I'm worried about fixing.

There is a button that you can press to release the key from the ignition when this happens. You can reach it by hand without taking the column apart but sometimes its just easier to take a long object and push the button

But, also if he wasn't getting any power from the batt and tried to start the car, the key won't go all the way back to the off position until power is restored either.

I did it on a car that had no battery just a week ago. It still works.

Yeah it was really weird because the car sat all night and then fired right up in the morning, moved 20 feet then my dad shut it off and the key wouldnt go to the off position therefore the key wouldnt release....then the car was just completley deal, no power at all.....after a jump its ran fine ever since. I think im going to start with a battery....its gotta wal-mart battery in there now from 2002....

I know what your saying. I was just saying when the car loses power, it won't allow the key to go back to the off position unless you restore power or push the button like you stated.
