1997 Grand prix. Girlfriend called with problems. I won't be able to look at it until this weekend. I asked her if it was overheating or shifting oddly and she reported no to each. Any ideas or things to look at? Is there an alarm that rings like that?

Maybe either the water pump is starting to go, or the A/C compressor is seizing up and slipping the belt. I could see how a dead bearing in one of those would sound high pitched and the buning smell may be the belt slipping across the pulley and burning it. Take a look at the underside of the belt and see if it looks glossy.

and..if she's driving it daily. Tell her to pull over at the first change or new sound. Cause that'll likely be the belt falling off.
I drink..so consider that when reading my posts.

FordMan nailed it. The AC compressor is seized. It sure is goofy the way things can be explained by others. So, it is pretty cold out and I don't have a lot of time. I was thinking of routing a short belt and eliminating the AC compressor until spring. Is that possible with these cars? Anyone happen to know what size belt? .

I know they make a pulley to eliminate the AC, but not sure on a shorter belt. I'm sure Bill or someone will chime in with an answer.

I think I'm going to just do the eliminating pulley and get the compressor on the cheap from Rock Auto in the spring.

Unfortunately the way our path is setup, we have to run the pulley or compressor.

Had the AC compressor replaced and the system recharged. No more smells.
