So today I posted about selling or possibly trading my car.

I got a hit from a kid wanting to trade a '98 Grand prix GT for my '03 malibu.

the model year difference doesn't bother me, And he has receipts for everything. Certified rebuilt motor, and a tranny rebuild. everything in the front end has been replaced. the list goes on and on.

What Im wondering is if the car is worth it. My Malibu has literally never let me down or left me stranded. Its very dependable and im honestly hesitant because I've never owned a grand prix, let alone a pontiac.

Any heads up would be nice, Problems for that year, things to look for, etc.

    Thanks in advance.

I would go take a look at it, test drive it and get in depth info specifically miles on certain things. Then you decide from there. 98's were better years then 97's but 99-02's were a lil better. With that much work done to it though you really dont have to worry bout much on the Prix. You decide though, just get a in depth with it first.

I have driven it. Motor runs amazing, starts up no hesitation, no noises at all. The trans shifts like its brand new. Body has one rust spot, 181 thou on that.

I mean around here you guys seem like you love your cars. My uncle liked them so much he ended up owning 4. So I take it there good cars.

But I've been reading up on grand prix's and I see there is this "trac off" light that keeps popping up, that seems to plague them.

Those are the things im talking about, certain problems experienced with that certain generation, or things that are known to go wrong and are "feared" by the gp community. lol. Hope this cleared things up.

all the stuff you see here problem wise, is just what happens to old cars, parts go bad and need to be replaced, this goes for any older car, not just gp's.

the abs/trac off light is usually a bad hub or the harness leading to the hub.

what were you asking for your car, going from a 03 to a 98 seems like a step backwards to me.

even if the 98 has a new trans and engine, the guy who owns it should not expect to recoup those money when selling it, its still only worth the bb value, so make sure your not getting screwed money wise, maybe you trade and some cash in your pocket.

Like I said before, the year difference isnt a big deal to me.

and im pretty sure his is worth more than mine bb value.

Well it is a 98 and not a 97 so thats good but you are trading your car which is an 03 for it. I would personally look for 00-03 model but if you have a good feeling about it then go with your gut.

How many miles are on your car? I wouldn't do it but Grand Prix's are very good cars from my experiences. When stuff does go wrong (and every car has it's common problems) they're relatively easy and cheap to fix.

X2, I've never heard anything but trouble from Malibu's around those years to be honest.

I'd trade him that car, yesterday.

Not to mention the WBody looks way better than a Malibu.

Werd. I can vouch for my '98...it runs excellent and hasn't let me down yet. These 3.8's are a very nice engine, one of the best (if not the best) that GM ever made for production cars. A month or so ago dad told me of an old Bonneville (which also has the 3.8 in it) that he had to drive to the bone yard because the company was upgrading their fleet vehicles. 313,xxx miles and he said it ran excellent the whole way there.
Personally, if the tranny is good and the body isn't rusted out like swiss cheese I'd go for it. I don't think you could have a better engine in a car and these w-bodies look fairly good too.

Well, I'm now the proud owner of a w-body. lol.

So far things are going good. I couldn't be happier.

It is a little bit more expensive to fill up than the malibu. (dont know what it costs some of you guys, but with gas here in MI it cost me 50 to fill up)

Im already getting the mod itch, ahah. cant decide on what to do first. But with the car being mostly black, I'm leaning towards some retro's? or maybe some other halogen's you guys could recommend?

Where do you guys find parts online?

yeah i agree, drive it nice for a while and check out its reliability, do some maintenance, and get used to it, start to save up for mods, and put together a plan.

I'm definitely not going to do anything to the engine until I know for sure that's its good and the trans isn't gonna epic-fail on me.

Things should be good tho, the motor is out of a 2000 GT, has less than 2k on it. The trans has been rebuilt to, and has less than 1200miles on it.

Im starting cosmetic, I wanna get some hid's and maybe swap out the fog lights. Do some LED work maybe? idk where to even start buying parts, Google is probably a good jumping off point tho.
