Reliability and lack thereof. Even if you take care of a car as it gets older it gets less reliable, things break more often, etc.

Amenities. As technology progresses, amenities that come standard in cars increase.

Value. This goes back to reliability and amenities. If you are having to buy something to fix the car every few weeks is it really worth keeping? You could be using that money to pay on a newer car with less miles and more amenities.

Personnely I love both of my gp's but even the one I just got I have dumped almost a grand into it and I have only owned it for 4 months. The reason I got my 06 when I had a decent car to drive was b/c of the kids needing a bigger car and all.
I wouldn't get rid of a car for a newer one b/c of the options Id just put aftermarket into my older car. The reason I would get a newer car is when they start to nickel and dime you out of every penny and every spare peace of time you have fixing them it sucks. Plus if your like me and don't have the 2k a month to fix em sometimes you have to let them go b/c a lack of funds to keep them going.

Have a newer reliable car for everyday and keep the GTP for a toy car. Do your major mods during the winter so you can enjoy it in the summer.

Other than the rust or total scenarios.. Some people have the time and money to hold onto an older car they love and for some people it's just not practical.

I've owned a black on black 95 Bonneville SLE for 8 out of the last 9 years.. And that urge or necessity to get something to replace it isn't in sight.

If youd rather make payments on a newer reliable car do this. Take $300 a month and just keep replacing parts on the gp/gtp for 4 years (duration of the loan usually) by then you would have dumped $14,400 into the pontiac. At that point everything dam thing on the car would be brand new. And guess what, by the time you pay off the 4 year loan o n the new/newer car, youll be dumping money in it to fix it!

The main key is fix it before it brakes.

So see, its a never ending cycle. Dammed if you do, and dammed if you dont. The only "true" limit is rust and if you dont stop it. But with 14k being dumped, a new paint job with some rust bullet etc you would never have to worry about it. In the end your gonna always have a payment of something.

The only problem is the GP breaks faster than $300/mo will afford
