I just bought my 99 4 dr GTP and the ignition switch let go completely as I was picking it up from the safety.

As I was trying to start it the car would run but just barely and then crap out completely. I did manage to get it started once or twice more but did kill the battery in the process. I charged the battery and then went again to start it but just got cranking with a bit of a fuel smell. Pulled a plug but it was dry.

Now my first question is, since I am not using the ignition, I am jumping from the starter to the battery with a lead, have I triggered the security?

Second question, if the key does not have a chip in it is there still security on the car?

Third question, The way it was running previously as in I had to feather the gas pedal to get the revs up to 4 K to keep it running, do you think the fuel pump resistor has bit it as it is the original behind the battery.

Any comments would be greatly appreciated.

99 should still have security in the key. You just can't see it. (in rubber piece)

Being a GTP, does it start then die right away? If so..that's likely the fuel pump resistor. Bypass it to get it running.
I drink..so consider that when reading my posts.

Bill, thanks for the reply. At the present time I am in just constant crank mode that is why I am thinking I tripped the security.

I have ordered a new ignition switch so I can try to start the car with the key and then do a relearn on the security. If it does the start and die I will then replace the fuel pump resistor and relocate it as it is still in the fender well.

I will keep everyone posted on this as I am pretty sure I have tripped the security. I cannot go check it as the car is 40 miles away and I do not feel like driving there just to check to see if the security light is flashing. When I go to put in the new ignition switch and be able to attempt to start the car with a key instead of jumping the starter I will check all the other things that I have been able to glean out of the hours of searching and reading I have done.

Thanks to anyone who has and will reply with advise it is always appreciated by this NOOB!!

im pretty sure if you tripped the security, it would be flashing security or something like that, they always seem to run for 30 seconds and die when having a security issue.

there is a way to make the pump go to hi speed, you bend a tab on a relay in the under hood fuse box, this gets you past the bad resistor. do a fuel pressure test before you start buying stuff too, turn key to run and test it, should be some pressure as the pump primes, you should be able to hear it prime too just by turning the key to run. or push in the schrader valve on the front of the engine to see if any fuel comes out of it too. looks like a tire valve, but larger, its on the fuel rail. thats where you test for pressure too.

and you could shoot some starting fluid in the intake to see if it fires up too.

someone post that pic of the relay tab bent, i dont have it.

Doesn't the security shut down the fuel pump? I thought I read that in my endless searching and reading. Thanks for the picture I did see that one but I couldn't find it again during my searching. I was looking for that exact picture showing the bent tab so I can send it to my buddy who has the car at his shop.

I just checked with Rock Auto and the ignition switch is on the way from Texas to me in Toronto. Canadian price was about $350.00 including taxes and Rock Auto with exchange rate shipping and tax was $120.00. I guess I can wait till Monday for it seeing I am saving over $200.00. We get rapped up here on parts.

With a new ignition switch it is going to be easier to diagnose this problem as it really does need to be done it is one less thing to think about while doing said diagnosis. Not going to throw parts at it the ignition switch is baffed completely, I did get it to work once so I know it is the problem and not a wire. The original previous owner had a problem with it in the summer when he was driving and the car just quit on him electicly, had it towed home and it sat since then. That is why he sold it or at least the reason why he decided to sell it. Since he rarely used the car and then it gave him this problem he figured it was time to get rid of it.

I have not driven this car yet but I am looking forward to it. A few minor cosmetic items and this is going to be a great car. I have always wanted one, too bad I bought this one for the wife but hey I will get to drive it too. I told her if she doesn't like it I will buy her something else and keep this for myself.
