Thread: Gas tank and filler neck

Hey all. I put some gas in the tank today and a few hours later I went back to the car and smelled gas. I saw dripping. Got the car to the autoclub and put it up on the hoist. It's dripping from somewhere near the top left side. So, I picked up a filler neck and gas tank. I'm replacing them both Sunday to be safe. I'm wondering if anyone has any tips or tricks that might have done this before. I've never changed a gas tank on a Grand Prix before, but have on other cars.

Nice. The body of the car is in awesome shape. The engine has a leaky front manifold which is an easy fix. I just had to put rear struts on it and run new rear brake lines. Sucks the gas tank was bad but I figure it should be a pretty good car once it's done.

if its a 97 the filler neck is different from the 98 up. i had to take the evaperator canistor (if thats what it is) off on my 97. had to take the plastic thing off that the fuel door rivits to. pretty easy job.

Well I finally got the tank and filler neck in. I had to cut the straps because there was no way I was getting the strap bolts out! So, took a little longer to weld them back. I also had to make my own vent line since the metal had rusted in the plastic fitting and wasn't coming out.

I think I would replace the straps with new ones, rather than trust welded straps. I'm partial to homogeneous steel, though, when it's possible.
