Thread: cv shaft and joint movement

my front end has had a small vibration for some time,(very small) i was pinning it on bad tires and the alignment not being perfect. so now i have good tires up front all balanced, and since the new tires and alignment the vibration has gotten worse.

now when on the highway, giving it light gas, just enough to keep it moving, the driver side vibrates (feels like a tire out of balance) if i let off the gas it goes away, dont notice it when jumping on it at highway speeds. dont feel it driving around town either.

so i grabbed the d/s cv joint, and tried to move it, it moved up and down, and back and fourth. it moved just a bit, then i tried to push and pull it and it moved both ways. into the hub, and back into the trans. i dont know what is normal amount of movement here.

did same thing to pass side and it has less movement and seems tighter over all.

both cv boots are intact and no grease anywhere.

im thinking i need a new axle but figured id ask the guys who know.

Yeah sounds like you need a drivers side cv shaft.

the in and out movement is nor, but the up and down move could be just from the joint(because thats what is does), so alittle movement is nor but not a lot have you checked the wheel bearing?, if thats good then a cv shaft maybe be the way to go

Never seen a wheel bearing cause a vibration under load only.

i haven't really checked the bearing lately, but i don't have a abs lights on, so i guess the bearing is ok.

then again the guy at the alignment shop was pushing and pulling and twisting the whole tire, as to test for movement, so if some thing was wrong there im sure they would have tried to sell me something.

Yeah if you had something loose in the front end they would have told ya.

Sounds like an axle to me. Wanna borrow a bad one? Then you can know for sure? Serious..it's right here.

looks like its weekend project time. and i get paid this friday, this every other week stuff stinks.

buying a new axle tomorrow, what brand are you guys recommend/using?

i got a autozone and a few napas by me. and peppys but i dont think this a sale for them this time.

Nappy will be the better quality.

well put the new axle in tonight and its still got a small vibration at 65 to 70 mph. the cars been pulling to the left and the wheel is cocked to the right a bit, so im going back to the shop to have them fix that,(it was just aligned 2 weeks ago, this should be free) and have the tire re balanced, due to the fact i put fix a flat in that tire and did not drive it for very long and it may have ran to the bottom of the tire when it sat over night.

the old axle was defiantly bad too, its not the same vibration at all.

What axle did you end up buying?

i got the napa reman axle , 64 bucks, 1 year warranty.

why did you put "fix a flat" in your tire?...it does nothing besides piss off the ppl at the shop working on it

the rims leaked after i put new tires on, and thats what i did in a pinch to fix them. had no time to take the tires off and fix the rims. i normally would not use fix a flat but i really have no choice this time around.

yeah sometimes its unavoidable,
when they take the tire off the rim try and get them to clean all of it out or just get a new tire all together...that stuff does some nasty stuff...they can also take a wire brush to the rim bead to clean it up and help the tire seat better

from what ive read around the net, the best way to fix the rim is to dunk the tire and rim in a tub of water, mark where the air is bleeding out from on the rim, mines the flat of the inside, all the chrome is pealing off the outside of the rim. the parts you cant see.

take tire off, sand affected areas, then spread silicone rtv sealant over the bad spots, wait till it sets up, (a few hours), put tire back on.

all 4 of my rims are toast, so im looking for a new used set, i found some cross laces on line i may try to get, im thinking they may just look real good.

never heard of that one, worked in a tire shop for 2 years(changed so many damn tires) used the watertub trick before but never put rvt on a rim, we just stuck with the wire brush, have use sandpaper before but imo the wirebrush works the best

the tire shop tried that fix and it FAILED bad, leaked 10 psi in 30 minutes after they were done, tire shops dont have a few hours to let rtv set up,

and the rtv stuff, this was is a GM tsa for the fix as far as i know, found it posted up on another site.

damn then maybe it depends on the shape of the rim..yours sounds real bad..off topic thats seem pretty cheap of gm to say, just some gasket sealer on it, if they would make cheap rim in the first place ppl wouldnt havve to deal with it
