I had a 02 Grand Am in college and loved it. Then when on the way home from school while I was stuck in traffic some minivan struck the back of my car at nearly 30-40 mph so the car got totalled.
For a while I drove a Chevy Malibu afterwards then my dad got a 1999 Chrysler Concorde. The car was boaty and the braking distance on the car always made me nervous. Looking back on it though the car was quite comfy.
My mom after that bought an 02 Saturn Ion....that car just feels so damn tiny and it doesn't even have ABS!
I was thinking I was going to buy the G6 GXP from my neighbor but the asking price was too high for a car with 60k miles.
My dad knew I liked my old Grand Am so told me to check out the Grand Prix's at a local gas station. It was an 02 GTP Coupe it looked nice, I heard the Series 3800 engine was reliable and almost indestructible, so I gave it a shot. The owner of the gas station was on vacation so it was like a grueling 3 weeks waiting, I was basically dead set on buying it. As soon as I turned on the car the smell of burning oil and coolant mixed together. I was soooo pissed. Two weeks later my dad hears another GTP was being sold down the shore, we go down there my dad inspects the car and says it looks clean.
So...I got an 01 GTP coupe and the only thing wrong with it was a faulty ignition switch that caused the security to go ape****. To be honest I still wonder how the G6 GXP compares to the Grand Prix.
After my 01 Miata was repo'd I was gifted my fathers 94 Bonnie SSEi and thru some strain, some luck, help from the PontiacBonnevilleForum (now GMForum) and a couple hundred bux I got her up and running and she still is today, tho she's seen alot better days. Needs alot of fixer-ups to be perfect again (one day in the future lol).
Well the ol' Bonn-EVIL started throwing some major problems so I started looking at options. After about a week the dealership I worked at got a 99 GTP Sedan as a trade-in. 67k, great condition, all records in our system... Test drove her for the weekend, Monday got a loan taken out for her, and they threw me the keys.
I really wanted a GTP, the bonnie is nice, comfy to drive but the Series I engine, even with the Heaton is still sooooo slow... after test driving the SII L67 I was sold.
The funny part was the dealership told me I'd have to replace the supercharger because it was rattling and would soon break, Thank you smart people for teaching me the ways of coupler replacement
Rental car company gave me one for a trip from San Jose to L.A. in 1998. I'm 6'6" and loved how comfortable I was in it. I also was blown away by the highway gas mileage. The rental was an SE of course, but I found '99 GTP coupe for a great price in 2001.
didnt really think about it,
needed a car and the car was a super low price and couldnt pass it out and plus i was 15
What made me decide?
Because it was free and I needed a new ride as the frame on my old Vic was about done. It also has the honor of being the first GM car in the family.
Did some work on my buddies 97 F150 and payment was my 00 GP GT.
It appears that Pontiac is trying to even the score with the Fords in my collection, seeing as I have the 95 Bonne and a 95 Firebird Formula as well, lol... those were also free to me
it was an accident, lol. I went to a small dealership to check out a 3.8 firebird (needed a dd for getting to and from school and figured it would still be kind of sporty and ok on gas). The pics in the ad looked great and it had low-ish kms. When I got there it was terrible. The windshield was smashed, there was rust all over one side, and the interior was nasty. My dad and I were going back to his car to leave and I happened to glance at a GP sitting there. I'd always thought they were lame-ass old people cars, but noticed the GTP badges and was instantly attracted. Took it for a spin and left with it later that day.
96 GTP 3.4 Cheap
02 Grand Prix GT Coupe Cheap
98 Regal GS Cheap Burned down
98 Grand Prix GT Cheap on its 3rd engine, 182k on factory, 89k on the replacement believed to have coolant in it at one point threw a rod, currently has a 00 Impala engine in it.
Parts are cheap, cars cheap to buy, cake to work on. Beats the hell out of an import IMO.
parents cut me a good deal after graduation after i told them i wanted it when they got it for my mom when i was like 15. sold my truck and was trying to get a first gen W-body, but i knew about the service records and thought it was fast lol. wanted a backseat, it was in great condition (was...) and is my favorite color. i've been a GM loyalist through everything, and it just seemed right. the need for speed came soon after, and i've been trying to top swap it ever since. it'll be running again in a week or so hopefully
I'd like to think so. Installed a new trans, entire rearend swap and front exhaust manifold studs for the 00 GP.
Bonne was "gifted". Helped a longtime co-worker out when she was struggling to get it running and when she bought a new 'stang she called my on X-mas and asked if I wanted it since I took such good care of it when I worked on it.
95 Formula was my best friends. Unfortunately the reason its mine is that it blew the drivers HG and motor has sat partially apart for the last 5 years before his mom (cosigner on loan) decided to give it to me since he basically never put forth the effort to fix it and they weren't helping him out anymore financially. They felt bad that I'd stored it INSIDE one of my garages for so long taking up valuable space. So, if anyone can find a good LT1 longblock at a reasonable price, or even a complete one from a Caprice or Roadmaster let me know. Not parting it out and it won't get sold until it runs, although I'd love to steal the brakes off of it
It was my Grandfather's car up until the day he passed.
Now it's mine...
If only he could see it today and all it's been through without him.
I'm sure he would be proud.
Thread from the dead, but w/e.
Had a 00 Expo, got bored, sold it, bought a 02 WRX, hated driving stick, bought a 01 GTP, sold WRX, then bought a 69 Ford Van, then a 92 Jimmy, then a 01(?) Lumina.
Details: I had the WRX and hated driving stick, so I searched CL for 2 or 3 days looking for a car. I REALLY wanted a 04-05 Bonne GXP, but couldn't find any. Decided to downgrade to a GTP. Only way I was ever going to own a GP was if it was a GTP. I wasn't interested in the looks of GP's, still really not that high on them, but the engine drew me in. Called on around 5 or 6 of them. One of them called me back that I didn't even remember calling on. Said he had a 01 GTP Special Edition w/ 62k for $5500. Went and looked at it and the info was getting better and better, so I bought it. About 4 days later the title came in the mail for the WRX and that night I responded to an ad on CL for a wanted WRX. Once or if I ever learn how to drive standard properly I might miss the WRX, but I doubt that will happen anytime soon.
wuuut?? can't drive a stick?
thought the rule was to learn how to drive that first before you can have an auto. guess that doesn't apply
