Thread: Car Vibrating badly

Like the title says, my car is vibrating badly. It is mainly when I am at highway speeds. It is worse when I am on the gas, when I let of the gas if goes away. When I go over bumps, the front sounds pretty clankey and the steering is a little loose too, like if I am on the highway and hit the gas the car will try to pull one way and I have to counter steer a little. It is a 2000 GP GT with 150,000. I have been told it needs new struts. I am pretty sure they are the orignals. I am going to replace them myself. Is there any write up on that? What all do I need to rebuild worn out suspension beside new struts?

check tie rods (inner and outer), ball joints,and wheel bearings. Get quick struts and it's really easy to change, just 2 bolts at the spindle and the4 under the hood

Yep, I am pricing the quick struts now. I just got a 10% off coupon for ebay, so I think I'll go that route. I found the quick strut for $172 a piece on Ebay.

Are the tie rods and ball joints difficult to do? I would need an alignment when finished with them, right? How do I check to see if they need replaced?

grab the wheel while both are off the ground, and the steering column unlocked (key on not running) if something moves before everything else does it's bad, you will need an alignment after doing the struts anyway

So, pricing the quick struts compared to just struts is a difference of about $450 ($680 compared to $200). I have a new baby so looking to do things as cheap as possible. Is it bad to use the old strut hardware? I am not to concerned with the extra time it will take to swap it over. It is an old car that I plan to sell soon, just want it to ride smooth again.

really you should do the mounts if they are that bad (they have a rubber piece and bearings that wear at about the same rate as the struts)

That thing with the quickstruts is you are paying for new springs too, do I really need new springs? I could buy new struts and bearing plates for a lot less than $680.

I buy new struts, KYB-GR2's for around $200, then 4 sets of these, $120, then in am only out $320. Is this a bad way to go? Isn't that about all I would need for a swap?
