The steering in my 98 Grand Prix has a problem I can’t seem to solve. While driving over about 35mph on a sweeping right curve the front wheels seem to shift to the right. It feels like a tire catches a groove in the road and shifts to the right but that’s not what’s causing it. At about 60mph it’s more prevalent and is actually a little nerve racking. It only happens on a curve to the right when the steering wheel hits a certain point in the curve. You can feel it shift right, and then when returning the steering wheel as the curve straightens you can feel it shift back left. The tie rod ends had some slight play so I replaced them. The bearing at the top of one of the front struts was bad so I replaced both front struts. Then I had a four wheel alignment done and had the mechanic check the front end, especially the ball joints. He said there were no problems but that I had a little torque steer which is usually caused by a bad motor mount. I never felt any torque steer until after he aligned the front end. I also rotated the tires from front to back to eliminate a possible bad tire. It seems to be getting worse. I wondered about the steering rack but that just seems unlikely to me. I’ve not checked the motor mounts yet but that also seems unlikely. My 98 has 155K miles on it. Has anyone ran into this problem?

the front rubber mounts in the control arms are shot allowing the angle of the whole wheel assembly shift. The mounts have likely broken loose from the control arm. I found this with my car even after going to the front end shop that said the alignment was great and there were no problems. Jack it up remove the wheel and look at the front rubber mount. I repalced both lower control arms and went to another alignment shop and the car drives like new again, the parts cost 65 per side and a little replacement time.

Good suggestion, so I checked them today. The rubber mounts are nice and tight. I pried a little with a crow bar to see if I could get any sloppy movement but there wasn't any.

Its probably the preload needs to be adjusted in the rack.its your steering fine other than when driving? If it is could be the struts or mounts are properly torqued. If it feels a little loose have the rack preload checed and the rack bushings. Also check to see if the adjusting jam nuts on the tie rods are tight
