True, but I bought my car for 3k, It's probably worth about 2k right now. The shop would charge about 1k for the labor, and figure $400-$800 for a motor. It may be about $500 cheaper to have it fixed than to buy a new car.

im thinking it could all be done for around 1200, your gonna need to do some leg work looking for a engine, not sure which one you have, but there's one on sale here, and they are all over junk yards. it dont need to be same year. around 450 to 500 for a engine, and like 500 or so for the install.
Hmm. I'll look into that. Thanks.
shop around with the local shops, ever see a shop with engines laying on the side of the building? those are usually the guys to ask, some shops just wont do it, and other are more than willing to do it.
get the motor on your own tho, that way they don't charge you more for it, as it happens.
and if you got a friend with a pick up truck that cuts out any delivery fees too.
You aren't low on coolant are you? It's odd that the motor just slowly seized up like that. Usually they give you some warning before that happens.
I'd pull ALL the plugs out, leave them out and then stick a ratchet on the crank bolt and give it a turn clockwise and see if it moves. Was there anything else that could have been an indication of why it just died? Low oil? I wouldn't call it dead just yet.
Is a 2005 Grand Prix engine compatible with a 99? They're both 3.8 non supercharged. Found a 2005 engine with 39k for $400, or a 99 engine with 135k for $750. So if the 05 is compatible it would be a much better deal.
Fordman, I apparently had a coolant leak and didn't know it. I never thought to check the coolant myself when it died, but the mechanic did and said it was empty. What's funny is my last grand prix died of a blown head gasket. Should have paid closer attention this time.
as long as you are non supercharged it should work, have to swap a few parts from your engine to the donor but it should work, others here know for sure and may chime in with better details.
that was some fast research on your part already lol
did the low coolant light ever come on
No sir.
I'd be willing to bet that the UIM cracked and filled the cylinders with coolant. That's why I said to remove the plugs and see if you can turn it then. Heck, put the starter back onto it and just disable the ignition and fuel and see if you can spin it over. I'd be willing to bet you will shoot coolant out of the cylinders.
This motor may not be done just yet. The only question would be how bad are the bearings in the lower end? Have you pulled the oil dipstick to see if there are any signs of coolant in it? It would look like a choc. milkshake at this point.
Not sure on the compat. with the 05 motor. I know its still a 3800, but not sure if the longblock changed any between series II and III. If not then all you would have to do is reuse all your accessories and LIM/UIM setup and be good to go. I think the knock sensors also have to be from your car but not 100% sure.
05 has an aluminum UIM.
Thanks Fordman, I'll try that. Just pull the spark plugs and see if it spin when I crank it?
