Thread: Intake Gasket Leak

So I recently got my '97 GTP. I love the car. I was told when I bought it that it needed the front valve cover gasket replaced. After some checking on the web I found out that there was a recall on that. *YAY* So my local GM dealership fixed that up for me. But as the Service Rep. was driving my car into the garage he said he heard an intake leak. Now I am not a professional mechanic but I do know some things about cars. Unfortunately I know about intake leaks on grand prixs from first hand experience. I had a '96 SE with the 3.1 in it have an intake gasket go bad. Now my GTP does not show ANY signs to me to have any problems. I.E. running rough, overheating, leaking/burning coolant. So I was just curious if there was any other Tell-Tale sign that the intake gasket was going bad.

I personaly think the Service Rep. just heard the whine of the supercharger and assumed it was an intake leak. The guy didn't even know that the GTP's were supercharged.

Well if he didnt know gtp where supercharged I wouldnt trust him or the dealership. The number one thing for a gasket leak I have seen and I have personally replaced over 20 of them on different cars, is a low coolant light after you have already added coolant. The other is if you oil looks like peanut butter in color. Then also sometimes you will actually see oil in the coolant.

My low coolant light is on. But I have read that it could be a problem with some coolant level sensor. It comes on all the time, till I am sitting at a red light and the car warms up a bit then like when the thermostat opens the light goes off till the car cools down... But there is no oil in the coolant or vice versa.

Its possible its4 the low coolant sensor, but these motors are notorious for lower intake gasket leaks. GM knew about it but did nothing, but for some strange reason redesigned them. Switch out your coolant sensor light and if it comes on again then I can almost bet you its leaking. Sensor should be on passenger side of radiator 4-6inches down looks like a black square.
