EDIT: The problem was bad wheel barings AND the rear brakes. The guy said the rear brakes were cutting into the rotors. So for $100 labor and $275 in parts its all fixed!

Lately I have been hearing a loud noise that sounds like its coming from the rear of the car. it gets louder the faster I go. Its not the tires because I started hearing it before I replaced them and still get it. Tonight on my way home when I stopped I heard a horrible grinding sound, which got louder the more I stepped on the brakes. The noise would stop shortly after letting up on the brakes and driving. I'm assuming this is bad rear brakes??? Could this be related to the other noise Ive been hearing? If its brakes I think I can find someone to do those cheap for me but I can't afford to keep going to the mechanic if I don't have to. Any ideas??? If you need more info just ask, Im hoping I can at least get some ideas...

at first i was like okay maybe it's a wheel bearing since the faster you go the louder it gets.

but then you turned it into a braking issue instead of a speeding issue. i'm confused?

and as far as replacing brakes, i had never touched them until the other day. and it's as easy as changing the oil. you can do it and won't be nan one a labor charge at the shop

Could be the brakes, pull a tire and see if they are worn out.

Its two different issues...the first issue was the noise I had while driving, where it got louder the fast I drove.

The second problem I came upon tonight with the grinding happening when I brake.

I'm just wondering if the two could be related or if I have two seperate problems???

well, like nick said it could both be the brakes. but if it feels GRINDY, i would put my money on a wheel bearing.

but either way, if you gots teh noise while u braking, check em out and see if they're worn.

Your squealer was probably hitting the rotor telling you your brakes are about gone, now they are gone and grind while braking.

Wife brake were grinding on the rear, checked the outer pads and all looked good, until I pulled the calipers and found the inside one were worn out, thanks to a sticking caliper. Cleaned, lubed and replaced pads and all is well now.
