I have a 97 grand prix gt (3800) and recently the SES light came on and every now and then when I would start it it would rev up but not be able to keep at idle and die. Or as long as i gave it gas it would stay going. As soon as I restarted it it would be fine, but the light would stay on for the next few trips and then go back off. I took it to the shop and they told me it was the MAF so i said to fix it. They put on a new PCV valve and air filter and changed all the spark plugs and charged me $333. (i know i got screwed). I left and drove two blocks to the gas station and the SES light came back on, and no i did not get gas. Now about every other time I start my car it has the same problem again, and the light comes on and goes off. Does anyone have any ideas of what the exact problem might be so i don't get screwed again?

Maybe they didnt even fix the MAF at all & jus did the tune up and reset the computer...alot of shop charge are sheisty like that. Go to AutoZone or Advanced Auto Parts and have them do a free check engine light check to scan for the codes...and let us know what they are!
