Ok, I've got a pretty good oil leak coming from the rear top of my engine, I think its the valve cover gasket. I want to fix it asap, so what type of gaskets are good/bad, and is there any tips/tricks anyone has before I start on this? Im a noobie on these cars and im going into this kind of blind. Any help would be appreciated.

My favorite gaskets are either Fel Pro or GM. They fit and seal the best. Always ensure they have the grommets, the grommets apply pressure to hold the cover down. Fel Pro# VS50465R

Add a good can of brake cleaner and some rags. Wiping the head edge where the gasket seals and the groove of the valve cover will ensure you are leak free.

Most likely you aren't a 97/98, you'll have to pull the alternator, and the alternator bracket/belt tensioner. This means you'll want coolant and a set of coolant elbows Dorman# 47065. Some steel wool to clean the coolant elbow holes in the LIM/Tensioner is always a wise move.

Overall it's pretty straight forward of a procedure.
I drink..so consider that when reading my posts.

Yep just pulling my 98 engine and trans lastnight and found out how much a dumba$$ setup that is on the back valve cover. I pulled mine to see if I could see anything broke on the bad engine valvetrain looks fine much be in the bottom end.

well... Most people switch to "green" stuff anyways. Some say that dexcool clogs the coolant passages. And the green stuff is better!

So I've been doing some research on all of this and it sounds like I might wanna go ahead and take care of the manifold gaskets as well. I feel a little overwhelmed with this task by myself but don't think I can afford to have a shop do it.....im not saying I can't do it, but a little nervous about taking it on myself.

Do your valve cover gaskets first.

Then you'll probably have enough confidence to do the LIM.

felpro, and the alternator and all its brackets have to be moved out of the way. and depending on the year your egr bracket might need loosened.

    thanks.

and i believe the price to have GM do the LIM gasket is $900 some. the gasket costs 40 bucks. if you can do the UIM, the LIM is not much harder.
dexcool is better on the metal, but when it comes in contact with air it coagulates and clogs stuff up. there are pro's and con's either way you look at it.
