So I see a lot about a trans cooler and a shift kit.....do they make the car more RELIABLE and how much are they. And how much difference could the shift kit really make?

Prices vary on the parts. Summit or Jegs may be a place to start.

And yes, they do help the trans live longer. The main enemy of any trans is heat. Less heat=happy trans.

So, with that in mind say you install a shift kit. Not only does it firm up the shifts and make the 4t65e slushbox more fun to drive, it is actually removing some of the built-in slip of the clutches by applying them more quickly during shifts. Less slip between shifts= less heat generated.

External trans. cooler- By installing the properly BTU rated cooler it also helps to disappate heat more efficiently than the built-in cooler in the trans., which to me is more of a heat exchanger than a cooler, although I guess you could argue that since it does reduce the temps somewhat it can be called a cooler. This will also help the trans. live longer.

There are 2 primary styles of coolers- plate and tube/fin. Each has their pros and cons. Personally I like the plate style coolers better just because they can take a bit more abuse from road hazards (rocks, debris,etc..) then the tube/fin style. I've run one on each car I own and have yet to have a failure due to overheating. Also, make sure the rating is correct for your car as you don't want to OVER-cool the fluid either. The trans. is designed to work off of a specific temp. range. If the fluid does not get to that range it may not peform as well and could increase wear. In other words do NOT get the biggest cooler you can find and install it. There is no need to have a cooler the size of your radiator.
