is it bad for the electric oil pressure sender unit to have it installed on the car before wiring it to the gauge?

not going to hurt it, it just changes it's internal resistance

ok thanks guys, i installed the sender unit this past weekend and plan on doing the electrical wiring soon along with swapping out my 2-gauge pod pillar with my 3-gauge pod pillar with color matching interior lol

edit-also the main reason was because i bought a prosport electrical fuel pressure gauge and somehow the fuel sender unit malfunctioned on me and didn't work accurately after a few weeks of using it. i then contacted prosport and they said they'll swap a new one for me and just have me pay shipping. will i got the replacement and again a few weeks later the fuel sender wasnt accurate anymore. the way i have the wiring is the way i did all of my other gauges wires. off from the gauge i wired the switched 12v to the radio fuse, ground to bare metal, and the green wire goes to the fuel sender unit. off the fuel sender aside from the green wire is another wire that goes to a ground. now i have a remote start and since the only thing that powers on is the starter, ignition, and the 2nd accessory, all of the electrical components from the gauges arent on, is it possible the fuel sender unit would go bad w/o having the proper power supplying it?

shouldn't, sounds like they use cheap senders (problem with electrical gauges, they don't have the accuracy of a mechanical)

I almost bought from them but then I decided the $60 for an Auto Meter is worth it. Their electricals are as good (if not better) than mechanical.

is it possible to keep the prosport fuel pressure gauge but use another vendor's fuel sender unit?

Find out the range it reads, the ohms ratings at which PSI readings, and match another sender to what you have.

Or take the part number off the one you have and try to figure it out with Google.

will i got the oil pressure gauge hooked up but when i turn the key to accessory on or fire the car up, the needle pegs all the way to the right? according to the autometer directions i believe i followed it straightforward. i then thought i had to also ground the sending unit but that didnt do anything as well. a friend and i made certain all of the wires off the oil presure gauge were making contact with the other wires. we used butt crimps. any ideas or suggestions?

Agreed. The gauge isn't made to work with a sender in that range.

But is it made to work with the same range (PSI to resistance) your gauge is made to work? There isn't really a set "standard" for this stuff.

will the seller said it worked on his car for 2 years. i'd imagine i fudged up somewhere in the wiring that could of either or both killed the gauge and/or the sender. im beginning to hate electrical gauges >.<

But what gauge does he have? If it's not the exact one you have, then the fact it worked in his car doesn't matter. It seems like the wrong sender for the gauge you have.

The wiring is easy so I don't see how you could've messed it up.
