Re: Dual exhaust on n/a 3.8
It will change it some? The more air you pull into the engineand the more you open up the exhaust opens up the motor and has to change the sound some. I agree with you to a certain extent on these motors because the stock manifolds are so resrictive and they have such a small throttle body. Every little thing you do will change the sound of the motor some, especially headers, cam and valve train.
Re: Dual exhaust on n/a 3.8
it doesnt matter. the intake doesnt change the exhaust sound.
Re: Dual exhaust on n/a 3.8
sure it does :th_nervous:
Re: Dual exhaust on n/a 3.8
I'm taking it to another exhaust shop tomorrow to add a glasspack in place of the res hopefully that will take away most of the "rice" sound. Once I find the intake thats legal in CA I will order that as well. As for the headers smoh legal one for CA are like a grand so **** that. I'll keep you guys posted on my rice sounding removal adventure lol.
Re: Dual exhaust on n/a 3.8
I had my air box on just a few minutes ago and took video of the exhaust with the box on and it was the raspy gp sound. I put my open cone on and it definately added depth to the exhaust. It didnt change the tone but it did add depth.

Post the Vid or send me the link please
Re: Dual exhaust on n/a 3.8
im trying to figure out how to do it from my phone

because the motor has the ability to breath doesnt mean the exhaust note changes. the sound of the exhaust is based on a few factors:
a) size of the piping
b) running a cat or no cat
c) running a resonator, which type, or not running one at all
d) which mufflers are being used, or none
e) not from the intake
Re: Dual exhaust on n/a 3.8
stock air box is restrictive, now put on a cone filter that is less restrictive, more air is able to pass through the engine and out the exhaust
the more air going in has to come out as well and it comes out at the end of the exhaust system where the mufflers are so they will behave differently
Re: Dual exhaust on n/a 3.8
Not trying to argue with anyone or be a pita at all. I havnt been on the grand prix scene for very long so believe me or not, try it yourself. I cant get the second video with the deeper sound to send to my email. Even on something as small as my one cylinder 450 cc quad the engine tone changes when you add a different intake. Simply because the air is flowing at a different cfm through all of the parts you just mentioned. More air flowing into the tb through the intake manifold, into the heads and out through all of the components you just mentioned at greater volume creates a different sound again if you dont believe me get a db meter and test it at the pipe it does change. If you really want it to change up the compression and port the heads, then it will be very noticable.
Re: Dual exhaust on n/a 3.8
what youre hearing is the intake.
Re: Dual exhaust on n/a 3.8
f) sure it does :th_nervous:
Re: Dual exhaust on n/a 3.8
I have been building motors for 12 or so years bro, im over it your right im wrong even though the laws of physics say im right.
Re: Dual exhaust on n/a 3.8
uh yeah.. A intake will effect the sound of your exhaust.. It will add depth to it just as thunder stated.
Btw magnaflows sound great This one has no res.
YouTube - 1999 Pontiac Grand Prix GTP w/Magnaflow exhaust
Btw this is the best sounding 3800 iv ever heard and its got a magnaflow
YouTube - 1996 Monte Carlo - L67 Swap + Whipple
Re: Dual exhaust on n/a 3.8
sure guys. keep being naive, it's fine. just stop saying it and letting other people learn things that aren't true.

Re: Dual exhaust on n/a 3.8
More flow = more volume.
not necessarily the tone.
is this a nice middle ground for you guys?
Re: Dual exhaust on n/a 3.8
im talking about no matter what intake you put on your car the exhaust note will not change. given that you were to change the FLOW DYNAMICS of the upper and lower intake then you may be able to produce a small, but different, sound from the exhaust. putting an open cone, short ram, fenderwell, etc. intake on your car will NOT change the exhaust note.
Re: Dual exhaust on n/a 3.8
Engine sound and Exhaust sound are two different things.
You know what changes your exhaust note? GO FAST MODS! If its not quick, noone gives a damn what it sounds like anyway.
Re: Dual exhaust on n/a 3.8
Yeah my engine makes more noise but my exhaust sure dont.
