Hey all, new 2002 GTP owner here (sedan). Picked it up for a song at a local dealership. 150,000 miles so it's certainly no spring chicken, but I am also well aware that the 3800's are built like tanks and if taken care of (clean carfax and numerous service records) that this car should continue to last a long time. I'm not really serious about modding the car at this point, but it's something I'm keeping my eye on for the future. There definitely seem to be some very knowledgable people here and was hoping I could get help with a few questions.

The car is showing a service engine soon light. It was on when I purchased the car, and the mechanic I took it to at the time told me it was setting a catalytic converter code, but that often the rear O2 sensor was the culprit in this case and would set a false code. I replaced the O2 sensor, and the light went off for a day or so but then came back on. He told me it might do that. Is this normal, could the other O2 sensor also be bad, and is it possible the cat itself is bad? Any way to check?

Second question is probably stupid, but the boost gauge (stock) never seems to show activity unless I really get on the gas. If I go WOT I'm pretty sure it hits full boost, but under normal driving conditions and even moderate to heavy throttle it doesn't seem to show any activity at all, or one bar at most. Is this normal, or is the gauge being strange? I don't see how it's possible for the Supercharger to not be properly boosting except under WOT, so any input would be great.

Final question is gas mileage. I understand this car's no civic, but I seem to be operating in the 15 mpg range which is pretty awful. I expect 20 or so in the city and 25 on the highway at least, and I don't think I'm sniffing that. I know O2 sensors can cause mileage problems, and new plugs/wires are next on my list of things to do for the car along with an oil change, but is there anything I could be missing? I don't drive with my foot on the floor constantly so I've ruled out driving habit as the problem here.

Any help would be appreciated. I'm not a wrench turner but I'm willing to start taking baby steps in that direction with this car. My fiance and I love it!

Alright..see If I cant help some..

To test the Catalytic...get on an open road, and floor it...
if it seems to 'hit a wall' as in, it doesnt want to accelerate any more...bad cat...also if you smell a really nasty smell with heavy throttle, thats another sign. Or you can have a shop run a pressure test to see.

It would be a good idea to replace the front O2 sensor as well, along with new plugs, plug wires, fuel filter, oil change, trans fluid change and filter, and supercharger oil change.

15 in the city is a little low...should be 17-20ish with lots of stop and go. I get about 30-36 on the interstate, but thats with lots of flow mods...

On the highway, expect about 25ish with a good tune up.

As for the boost gauge. That's about right. On a stock car, you dont make much boost. WOT should read full bars..
Even at 1/2 throttle, I might see 1 bar, if that. You really have to get into it to be making lots of boost.

Also, be a good idea to replace both belts, Accessory and Supercharger, to be safe.

Good luck with the car, and any other problems, feel free to use the search feature, and if you dont find anything, either ask me, or the forums.

Welcome, and congrats on the car.

Also, anything you do to help the air get in, and out more easily, will increase your gas mileage..
So an intake, and a set of headers will pay for themselves if you do lots of driving. Plus it will make the engine happier, and knock less.

Check out this thread, it will help you lots, if you decide to do anything to the car.

Thanks for the fast response! We have actually changed both belts already. When we bought the car it had a leak around the Oil Sending Unit that had caused the motor mount to fail and it had caused the belts to squeak and bloat a bit. I talked a grand off the car for what amounted to a 150 dollar fix heh.

I will definitely get that second O2 sensor replaced when I get the tune-up done as well. I really haven't noticed the car hitting a wall like you said on the highway or under WOT conditions, it runs fast as hell and seems to have a good power curve up to redline with no dead zones or bogging.

Really nitpicking honestly, the car body is flawless, needs a little detailing but what used car doesn't? No paint scratches, flakes, or dents, interior is leather and spotless with no rips or cracks, everything works including the HUD which I've heard is pretty rare to have functional on used cars. Came with every option available I think except for the 40th anniversary package. Power sunroof is sexy too. I definitely know where to come when I cave in and start modding though.

Edit: Awesome link btw, thanks a ton!

Another thing to consider is if the catalytic has been replaced with say a magnaflow, it'll toss that code. Around 2000 GM got stricter in the pcm with the level of emissions. This caused a lot of guys that started puttin magnaflows on to have an emissions code.
I drink..so consider that when reading my posts.

No Magnaflow's Bill, the car is bone stock. Whoever owned it before us used it for a grocery getter which is fine with me.

My guess is the upstream O2 is bad, causing screwed fueling, causing the lower mileage, and the SES codes.

I do believe pictures are in order too..

Just upload them to Photobucket, and copy/paste the IMG code. Easiest way to.

Pictures will be forthcoming as soon as I get the car washed/waxed. Promise. BTW Mechanic told me that the Cat stayed warm on the car for a long time after he started working on it, and that it sounded pretty solid, both warning signs that the cat could in fact be bad. I'll probably just put a new cat on it and the upstream O2 sensor for peace of mind as O2 sensors are notoriously fickle and he said he'd cut me a deal on the labor to do both.

My cat stays hot forever too, but eh. I usually hear it gets red hot, but no harm in replacing it i guess. Its also cold out, which will drop mileage. i was getting around 18 driving around in the cold. This weekend almost got up to 70 and I was getting 23 mpg city.

If I had to estimate, I'd say we're between 10-15 mpg city driving.

Quick question about a replacement stock cat. Was browsing around EBay and found this:

MagnaFlow Heavy Metal Catalytic Converter 99306HM - eBay (item 370481743610 end time Mar-07-11 02:22:24 PST)

Is that an appropriate replacement for my stock cat or can a better deal be had? Not looking at a highflow cat atm, just want to make sure the stock cat is in good condition for now.
