actually the correct fill for the '05 is right in the middle of the hash. So if you're near the bottom of the hash you're about a half quart low, near the top about a half quart over.
I can't keep oil at the top of my dipstick in my '05, I add oil and eventually it will go down to half way and just stay there.
Yep. Makes complete sense. The hash is pretty much intended to show *is it in range* and as checking oil levels can often be a range it makes sense for it to be smack in the middle with the correct amount (4.5 qts) at a median temp.
If the car had been recently run, it will likely show a bit low (oil still in the engine not the pan) and then you fill it to the top of the hash, you WILL have too much oil in the car.
Running too much oil in my experience has never been a good thing, it actually robs you of a small amount of power because the engine has to work that much harder to move the rotating assemblies. Truthfully running a tiny bit low will usually yield a small hp gain.
According to the owners manual, if the oil level is at the bottom of the hatch marks you need to add one quart.
