Getting screwed by mechanic?

Ok so my roommate has an 04 Impala SS that has recently started to knock, the knock only occurs once the motor has warmed up and runs smooth when first started for about the first 10 minutes. I was thinking it was more like a lifter while my roommate was leaning towards a rod. Once we took it to the mechanic he listened for about 5 minutes and decided it was a wrist pin and said the easiest solution was a new motor at the cost of 4 grand.

This is his parents car that he's been using to get back and forth to school since his truck is terrible on gas. His dad has always used this mechanic and recently had a head gasket repair about 2000-3000 miles ago. His dad is ready to pay for the repair because he's always trusted this mechanic. My roommate is at his parents house for a few days and doesn't have internet access so I've posted this for him to see what you guys think.

Buy a motor from Morad if you are worried about cost. Get a video of it running though if you can.

Here's a quick video he made the night it started having the problem. Its dark and the quality isn't the best. If that's the problem and the cost is accurate then that's fine, just have a hard time believing this guy. He's always done repairs for their family and the results haven't been the best. Less than a year on some body work he did for them the paint was already chipping off and little things like that.

its bogus but youre kind of at their mercy unless you tear it do it yourself. Go get a second opinion. That's really all you can do

Id buy a motor off morad or a junkyard or ebay, and put it in the car.

I bet if he bought the motor and had the shop put it in, it would be under 1500 bucks

With the HG going 2K ago, maybe it's possible that some coolant got into it and screwed up the bearings? That's def. a rod knock. Sounds like when the RPMs increase the rod starts banging.

Time for a new (used) motor. Don't bother rebuilding that one.

Yeah if it was my car i would definitely take it to a few other shops to see different opinions. Some people have too much trust, its a shame to say that's not always a good thing these days.

yea i agree, but u should let your friend know, tell him to take it to another mechanic and just get an opinion there is no harm in that at all
