First, some history on the car. I bought an '03 GP GT recently for my daughter. The car has 70k miles w/the 3.8 and the motor spun a rod bearing 9 days after we got it. The trans started slipping the same day. We got another 50k mile motor and trans from a salvage '02 GP and Trannyman95 graciously told me what parts I needed to swap in the transmissions to be able to use the '02 trans in the '03 car. This involved swapping the valve bodies, channel plates, pumps, internal wiring harnesses, and the internal shift linkages. To swap the linkages, you have to remove some of the clutch packs. I made the necessary trans changes Sunday, and I used the '02 torque converter, just because it had less miles. I finished putting the motor and trans in late last night, using 7.5 qts of Dexron III, and then drove it 2 miles and everything was great. I didn't drive it again until after work today and I went about 10 miles before I started hearing a high pitched squeal coming from under the hood. It only does it when there is no load on the trans. It'll squeal at any speed when coasting or idling in gear or in park. As soon as I give it just a little gas or if I'm going uphill with the cruise control on the noise goes away. When stopped, if I hold the brake pedal with the trans in gear and give it just a little gas, it goes away. I removed the drive belt on the motor and that didn't change anything. I shut it off for about 10 minutes, then started it and it took half a minute or so for the noise to come back. The fluid level looks good. Can this be the torque converter? Any ideas?

    Thanks.

    Dan

i know this sounds crazy spend the 2 dollars on a pcv valve and make sure u get the orings properly put back in i had this same issue and even had the trans diconnected and belt taken off and car started and still made the noise took a dealership to tell me a 35 dollar diognostic was a 35 cent oring fix.......no promise that its your issue but its worth a try especially with a salvage yard higher mileage engine its a cheap attempt

That's not so crazy. I'll give it a try. I'm not sure at the moment which PCV valve I used, but the '02 motor has 50k miles and the car has 70k. That would be great if it's just the o-ring.

    Thanks.

i just knew about that noise cuz i experienced it for a long time before finding the fix and it would actually cause a quart of oil to burn out threw the exhaust pipes every two days

Had same symptoms...turned out the lower o ring was missing on pcv. Changed last fall but its become noticable as temps have risen. It also took care of high idle condition I had...glad to find post.
