You could have air in the system. Is steering slightly easier if you give it gas and turn the wheel in park?

Go in the underhood fuse box and pull the TCS fuse. That will disable Magnasteer IIRC. If your steering is fine after that you have a magnasteer issue. Magnasteer is variable magnetically assisted steering and is usually equipped on GTP's

Follow their advice, check into it soon.
Last time my steering acted like that I blew out the seals in my rack and pinion.
But that was in a Ford, so my opinion probably means nothing!

I'm having the same problem with my 02 GTP but it is always hard to steer. It's easier to turn the wheel in my 97 wrangler and thats with 36" tires. I'm topped off on fluid don't notice any leaks anywhere. Doesn't air work its way out of the system at the resivour?

My '98 GTP is doing the same thing. I have absolutely no powersteering when I first start my car, but after a few turns it loosens up and then is almost too loose. What a pain the a$$. If anyone has any suggestions or ideas please let me know and if I figure it out I'll let you know.
    Thanks!

there is a recall for rack and pinion which causes steering described as driving with no power steering..

IF THIS OCCURS, THE PINION SHAFT CAN BE FORCED UPWARD DURING LEFT TURNS AND BACK DOWN AS THE STEERING WHEEL IS MOVED BACK AND TO THE RIGHT. IF THE PINION SHAFT MOVES FURTHER, THE DRIVER WILL NEED TO EXERT MORE EFFORT TO TURN THE STEERING WHEEL, SIMILAR TO A VEHICLE WITHOUT POWER ASSISTED STEERING. IF THE PINION SHAFT MOVES EVEN FURTHER, THE DRIVER WILL REQUIRE MUCH HIGHER EFFORT TO TURN LEFT AND MAY NOT BE ABLE TO TURN THE WHEEL AS MUCH AS INTENDED. WITH THE MAXIMUM PINION SHAFT MOVEMENT, WHICH REQUIRES INTERNAL GEAR COMPONENT DAMAGE, THE DRIVER CAN ENCOUNTER HIGH RESISTANCE TO TURNING LEFT, FOLLOWED BY UNINTENDED POWER ASSIST TO THE RIGHT. IN ANY OF THESE CONDITIONS, A CRASH COULD OCCUR.

Mine is doing the same thing with hard left turn only. Recently discovered p/s return line had a big crack. fixed that and now it is hard to make left turns. Eases up after the car is driven for 5 mins or so. p/S fluid level is great. not loosing any. Looks like i need to check TCS fuse and if its not that then consider changing Rack and Pinion? Or is there another simple fix to try?

This is true. And very imformative. Might wanna look into this area as my car has TCS Off light, but when the ABS light pops on, somehow it disables this magnasteer variable assist dealio. But when the lights are off, it steers better than any vehicle we have here.

So perhaps we have the same issues here? Might wanna check your fuses and wiring if any of this seems evident.

your problem sounds pretty much like mine and i wound up putting in a used rack and pinion, and new p/s pump.

my pump was whining and steering was getting hard, then the whining stopped so i got a new pump, that did nothing, so the rack was next, its a 4 hr job if you do it yourself, used rack cost me 75 bucks.

heres the how to for the rack http://www.grandprixforums.net/04_rack_replacement.php you dont need to pull the air box or the master cylinder, those line are easy to get to from under the car, and dropping the cradle at least 2 inches to help make more room to remove the rack.

this is the pump how to http://www.grandprixforums.net/power_steering_pump.php what this dont tell you is that clipped to the bottom back side of the pump is a wire, you need to un clip it, its your knock sensor so be carefull with it.
