Okay, so i'm really just dream building but I have a few Turbo questions regarding the N/A 3.1L in my 02 GP. Obviously I have the Slow Edition Grand Prix and 170whp just ain't cuttin it anymore. But, I want to actually have an engine to get me to where im going, so would turbo-ing it with a Garrett T3 Turbo be a big no-no? I have a friend that's great with tuning and he's installed countless turbo setups, but he reccommended that I ask everyone's opinion on here first. I know there's a Stattama Turbo kit for the 3.8L, but that obviously doesnt help me much. I dont have the whole kit, ill be doing it the cheap way (buying piece by piece), but i want to make sure that it's even possible to use this turbo on a GM 3.1L. Any advice or suggestions guys? Flamers go shat in a hat

Well, the late 80's, early 90's (I forget the exact years) Turbo GP was a 3.1L if memory serves me correctly. Now what your 3.1L and those 3.1L engines have in common or what is different between them is beyond me.

My parents had a Turbo GP and at that time I was only interested in my odds of getting the keys to it. But alas I was out of country for a while and when I had come back they had sold it.

I know that all may not be much help, but you're not off track with such an idea and more power to you. Id kinda like to see what you could do with that set up, it would be interesting to say the least.

    That's 170 crank HP for the 3.1L. ~136WHP (20% drivetrain loss)

    My stock 200HP L36 put down 162WHP.

Anyway, good luck with the build. We have 3.4L (pretty much same as 3.1L) Impala owners doing a lot of modding with the engine. Fairly impressive numbers but I have yet to see a turbo build on the 60* V6 in a W-body. I have seen centrifugal superchargers used.

^see, id MUCH rather s/c it because well, im just partial to superchargers as opposed to turbo. But ive been told that s/c'ing is pretty much out of the question unless you have a custom supercharger made, which is hella expensive. But keep the input coming guys, any help or info is great! Thank you Sabrewings and Scotty!

Well look at it like this. You either get a Turbo GP engine and stick in there, which Im sure they are increasingly if not near impossible to find and there is no telling what fabrication would be required to make that work. Or you grab a turbo set up off a Turbo GP and fit it in there, but that leaves you with an engine and tranny that may not be up to par with handling that amount of power. Or you use a centrifugal blower that I believe would be a whole LOT easier to make work since it would need a mounting point and likely a drive shaft run over to the serpentine belt system. After that its a matter of plumbing the intake in and the outlet to the engine.

Now of course that leaves you with possibly needing to beef up the tranny at a minimum. Perhaps a 4T65E would mate up, not sure. But the centrifugal blower would produce much less heat, probably capable of similar if not close boost numbers as a turbo or at least the turbo that was found in the factory Turbo GP.

And you and I are the same, I would much rather have a supercharger than a turbo. The only turbo set up that I would give any real consideration to would be a STS Turbo set up (rear mounted turbo(s)).

Not sure how serious you are about more power but I would think you would be better off swaping in a L32. There is a forum dedicated to the 60* engines I believe it is 60degreev6.com They might beable to give you more info on the 3100 and whether of not is worth modding.

Ever seen a CSC? They had a kit for it back in the day for the 3400. A centrifugal supercharger sits and looks like a turbo but is run by a shaft connected to the accessory belt. There was a Monte Carlo that had this setup but I can't find it anymore.

yeah, ive been to the 60* V6 site and asked a few questions and got thouroughly flamed a while back. I know that there are a few sites that offer mods for the 3100 and 3400 engines such as milzymotorsports.com and wottech.com. But nothing along the line of superchargers, just P&P stuff and springs, cams, heads blah blah. But none of that stuff is cheap either, i think a lot of the heads and top/ bottom end swaps start at around $450 not including shipping....I believe i was told once that the old TGP 3100 was a completely different engine than the current L82 3100 V6...
