When I bought the car a couple of weeks ago, the owner said the gas guage wasn't working and the check engine light was on because of it. I had the code read and came up with P1441, which makes sense, the solenoid is bad.

The car has approx. 123,000 miles on it, so my question is this...should I just go ahead and replace the whole fuel pump, which includes the solenoid and be done with it, seeing that it's more than likely the original? I'm not sure if there's even a way to buy/install a solenoid seperately and with those miles, better to be safe than sorry and have to do it all again a few thousand miles down the road...?

There are no other issues relating to fuel and it doesn't run strange or anything like that, just the guage working on its own schedule, never going lower than 3/4 full and then right back up to above full.

No one has ever had this code or have I already answered my own question, in that I should just go ahead and replace the whole mess? lol

Thank you! I figured that there wasn't a code for a "working when it wants to" gas guage, just wanted to know if anyone had ever had that code come up on their car and what they did to fix it. It would be nice to be able to buy the sending unit seperately, as opposed to spending $250+ for a new fuel pump when in reality it is not the pump that's bad, just the sending unit. Ah, well...pay the price and have new...lol.

the pump itself goin out isnt really a common thing on these cars... if it was me, id just get the sending unit replaced unless u have money laying around to spend. not too familiar with that code... i believe that link gives a breakdown on troubleshooting common issues for code. hope it helps.

Yeah, it's kind of a waste to replace something that's working and no, if I had that amount of money laying around I'd get a set of HIDs. I've been trying to find just the sending unit, but most that I've checked don't sell it seperate from the pump itself...grrrr. I'll keep looking, though, maybe I'll get lucky and find one somewhere. Thanks for your help!

that code could be for gas cap not being on tight... tighten it up til it clicks a few times. disconnect battery for 30 minutes... see if it comes back on. www.rockauto.com for sendig unit

I tried, but the light comes back on. Looked at rockauto and found a new pump for $176 + shipping, so may as well go with that. I couldn't find a sending unit sold seperately...

Yeah, it's the sending unit, but I haven't found any place that sells it seperately...am just going to replace the whole unit when I get the extra cash.

rockauto.com sells just the sending unit itself for about $24.00. It's called a "fuel level sensor". When you find your car click on "fuel/air" and that's where it is. my fuel gauge is acting up also so i ordered one myself. you don't need to buy the fuel pump.

After looking it up on rockauto I see that it's around $130 just for the sensor/sending unit. Maybe because my car's a '97 GT? Who knows, but I may as well buy the whole pump for what I'll have to pay for just the sending unit...ugh...lol.

my mistake. i have a 01 GP and it's $25.00 so i assumed it was the same for all the 97-03 GP's. you can try going with a used sensor or pump from ed morad parts. they're very good people to deal with. they might have just the sensor they can sell you...

No problem, I was assuming the same thing till I started shopping around for different parts for a '97. Actually I'm on a first name basis with Erik at Ed Morad's because of all the odds and ends parts I've been getting from them. They are great to work with! He did quote me $100 for a used pump (I didn't ask about just the sending unit, but I will), but I'm just thinking I'll keep doing what I've been doing as far as keeping track of fuel level by the trip odometer and just replace the whole pump when this one finally takes a crap. a tip for keeping your fuel pump healthy, especially on fuel injected cars is to not let your gas level in your tank get below one quarter full. it's hard on your pump as your pump needs some fuel to keep it cool and also it won't suck up all the water and debris that's on the bottom of all tanks. hope this helps....
