Re: Gas Guage Not Working...Code P1441
So this just started to happen to me again it did it back when I bought the car and it resolved itself now almost 2 years later it started doing it again.
But my question is I have to drop the fuel tank to get at the Fuel Level Sensor because its attached to the fuel pump assembly correct?
Re: Gas Guage Not Working...Code P1441
I have a '97 and do NOT have to drop the tank...access is through the trunk/back seat....not sure about what your car may require, maybe someone more familiar with the different years/locations can be of more help......and yes, I believe it's connected to the fuel pump assembly itself.
Re: Gas Guage Not Working...Code P1441
Alright I will have to take a look at my Chilton book a buddy has it right now just thought I would ask on here I hope its as easy as going through the trunk because I have had to drop fuel tanks before and its possibly my least favorite thing to do.
Re: Gas Guage Not Working...Code P1441
I haven't personally done my fuel pump yet, but going through the trunk/back seat , I've heard, is way easier than dropping a tank.....best of luck! Will you let me know how it all went when you do decide to replace it? Thanks.
Re: Gas Guage Not Working...Code P1441
yup I will let you know may be a couple weeks unless it decides to "fix" itself again haha
Re: Gas Guage Not Working...Code P1441
I had this exact same problem. I too thought that the sending unit was bad. Luckily, before I purchased a new sending unit I decided remove the fuel pump. When I got into it I found that fuel pump o-ring had been replaced by someone who didn't know what they were doing. The o-ring had fallen out of place and was holding the float down making my gauge read empty. After, replacing the o-ring the right way the check engine light went away and my fuel gauge worked.
However, if your gauge is reading full all the time then it is probably the sending unit.
You can test if it is the fuel pump o-ring like mine was by simply filling the tank. If you notice that fuel leaks out just before the gas pump clicks off you have a bad o-ring not a bad sending unit.
If it is not your o-ring it still may not be the sending unit. On the float arm there are metal contacts that tell the computer how much gas is left in the tank. Sometimes these can get corroded. If this is the case simply clean it with a pink eraser.
Hope this helps you.

Good info....mine doesn't leak...pretty sure it's the sending unit, but am not planning to replace it till the pump actually goes. If it ain't broke, don't fix it...lol...but all I do is hit the trip reset and go about 300 miles and fill up, repeat procedure....Will have a new one lined up, ready to go when that time comes. Thanks for the info! :th_thumbsup-wink:

Thank for the info, to tell you exactly what mine is doing. It says its full then as your driving it will dramatically drop to empty and sit there for a bit and it may float up to either half or else it will read that it is completely full again. And this happened like 2 years ago but it resolved itself since I was to lazy to fix and since I knew how far I could go on a full tank I wasn't to concerned about running out of fuel.

i did mine about a month ago. $30.00 for the fuel level sensor (that's what it's called) through rockauto. on a 97 it's about $120.00 though. it takes 2 people to put the locking ring back on. also the new sensor comes with a new fuel pump gasket..
Re: Gas Guage Not Working...Code P1441
Well driving my car today it died and the fuel pump fuse blew and i replaced it and it blew right away again. So now I have to really look at this problem.
Re: Gas Guage Not Working...Code P1441
Ouch, that sucks...good luck!
Re: Gas Guage Not Working...Code P1441
Thanks the pump came out very easy I went through the trunk it was the easiest fuel pump change I ever did but the pump cost me 230 dollars.
My old pump the wires were melted and one of the plugs was all burnt up the thing got super hot which is not good. Thank god it didnt start a fire on me.
Re: Gas Guage Not Working...Code P1441
Glad to hear you got it fixed! Yea, fire and gas don't mix really well...lol. Just curious...did it take 2 people to put the locking ring back on? I'm asking 'cause I'd like to know, when I end up needing to do mine, if I should ask someone to come and help me with that......thanks.
