Well, ever since I bought my car I always wonder if this is normal in grand prix's or mine has a problem. this "problem" has been there for 3 years or more but never asked anyone. I don't remember this happened to my past cars

First pic shows normal driving and second pic shows heavy traffic

Just remember that he is in heavy traffic, with no air flow to the motor. Mine does the same thing and I am not worried one bit.

whoa, thats ****ed, looks like you have a 180* t-stat or a horribly worn 195 based on that.

However, i can confirm the stock fan settings will get it get up to 220 before it takes serious action.

200 is 5 more than the stock t-stat temp....

its called tolerances, they're very loose at GM for no good reason....

I'd have it set to 205-210 if i were running a stock T-stat.

Why does my temp gauge start at 160 and his starts at 100? What year did they change that?

That is exactly what is it supposed to do, go up when sitting in traffic.
Also, have to consider ambient outside temperature. The hotter it is outside, the less heat the cooling sytem can remove, so in hotter times like summer, you can expect to see it a little higger in extreme situations such as sitting in the middle of the interstate while traffic is stopped to clear a major crash, or waiting in line 20 cars deep in the Mcdonalds drive through at 3pm with Amazonian River Slothes taking the orders.
And, that is not hot, still plenty of room before the red.

I think you're okay, but you may consider going ahead and changing your thermostat. Might as well put a 180* in there.

dont change it unless youre tuning the PCM to turn the fans on sooner. otherwise youre wasting time and money.

I would change it out for a 195... aka a new fresh stock one. Especially if the car has some decent miles on it and its never been changed. Most people dont change it till it fails completely.

It seems to be lacking in the proper open temp unless of course your temp sender is gone or inaccurate or the gauge is a POS like mine is.

How many stages does the GP fans have?

Use to the Thunderbird fans that have 2 speeds. When that second speed kicks in you know it on the Bird.
