So yesterday I was tooling around town doing some errands and when I stopped at the post office, I couldnt pull my key out of the ignition. Right now it needs one more click to let me pull out the key. Also all I have to do it press the brake and the trans will go into gear. Is there anything that I can do to try and get the key out before I have to go and put down more money on my car. I just spent almost 600 on new brakes because my fronts wre really warped and my rears were rusted beyond repair.

Seems like your shift cable linkage is out of adjustment. I would start there.

what year is your car? new ones if you shut off your car before putting it into park will stop the key from being released. start your car and put it in reverse then back to park then shut off your car.

So today I finally took care of the Key being stuck. I opened up the cowl under the steering wheel, and loosened the connector on the bottom of the park lock solenoid and the key came right out. Thanks for the direction and this saved me a crap load of money because I didnt have to go to a shop and have them troubleshoot it and me end up paying over a $100 for something simple.

it is possible for this problem to correlate with other symptoms and is caused by a bad ignition switch. if you begin to have problems with auto lights and climate controls, swap out the switch.

    97 GT - slow, rusty
93 CTD - more slow, less rust

Remove the center console and check the harness attached to the shifter. There's a switch that senses that the shifter is in Park. I found a very fine wire broken right at the connector. All I had to do was solder the wire to the harness connector and life was good again!

you can buy that connector from gm for about 50 bucks and it replace all the wire going to the switch. very common problem according to the dealer.
