We had it hooked up to the scanner after my check engine light was on for a miss.. I ran for about 4 miles on 7 cylinders then the car warmed up and it stopped. So we hooked the scanner up to it to see which cylinder it was. The scanner said my car was at 80* Celsius (I googled it) and thats 176* Fahrenheit. So I would say that I do have a 180* thermostat. Guess based on the comments I have been reading on here I will go with a 195* thermostat when I replace all of my hoses. Anything is better than the 10 mpg I am getting right now.

Too cold of thermostat will not cause a misfire. Keep looking for other causes, plugs, wires, etc.

What car are we talking about? If your 98 GP was running on 7 cylinders, it's definitely not stock.

Sounds like a force of habit nascar term, unless he's driving a nascar spec grand prix.

Misfires don't easily go away and can do more harm down the line. Since you have the scanner it tells you which cylinder and from there check the plugs and wires, possibly fuel injector if the first two checks didn't fix it. If it's only one cylinder misfiring then you don't have a coil problem.

^^I realize a stock L36 is not as fast as the sticker implies, but this sticker has worked and it is still a hell of a lot of fun to drive considering it's a grocery sedan.

Couple things, you only ran the car for 4 miles. How do you know it was completely warmed up? If you have the scanner on it, you should be able to watch the coolant temp rise from cold and heat up. When the t-stat opens, the temp will start to drop. You t-stat temp is going to be very close to where the coolant temp stopped rising and started dropping.

FWIW, if you are worried about it, a t-stat is $8 and takes all of 5 minutes to change.

ok I don't know why all of a sudden everyone is jumping into the whole hating thing. I had a bad plug wire. That problem was fixed before I even posted this thread I was just stating that we had it hooked up to a scanner in response to the first response I got on this thread. I drove the car 8 miles. The car was very well heated up. The car was on 7 cylinders for about 2-4 miles because of the bad plug wire. When the wire warmed up it would catch the contact. So thanks to everyone that answered about whether changing the thermostat would increase mpg and if it would change performance and not getting off topic and saying something like "if you are that worried about it a new thermostat only cost about 8 bucks and takes 5 minutes to replace."

The only reason I asked is because we are getting ready to do the intake gasket on it and I wanted to know. So I thought I would get the info about it before trying the higher temp thermostat that way I'm not replacing it for no APPARENT reason.

Wow, someone is a little sensitive. I didn't notice anyone jumping on you. And I, being the one who made the comment about changing the t-stat, was surely not hating. Just here to help you out, bud.

Well I may be, but this thread was just about getting the info on whether I should keep it or use the 195 When we do the intake gasket tomorrow. I'm new to the SC V6 and just wanted to see who all had noticed a difference or not you know? Cause for me if something isn't broke I don't want to replace it unless it will help performance. This case seems to not hurt performance and increase my gas mileage hopefully. I can only fit about 12 gallons into my gas tank and the manual says the car has an 18 gallon tank. So I'm trying to get the most out of those 12 gallons.

I promise you it's bigger than 12 gallons.

I run mine to about 14.6 gallons before I really worry about filing up. The tank holds a couple more than that, as well...

Hmm makes me wonder then.. cause 12 gallons is all I can fit before it spills out the top. Also just had my intake gasket both upper and lower and did the thermostat. Gotta say unless the computer just needs sometime to recalibrate, I'm not happy with the 195* t-stat. My boost gauge only goes up halfway when I stomp the gas and before it would go full. The roads are wet and I barely burn out now. So I will give it a couple weeks and see what the boost gauge does when the car is cold, but so far driving it 8 miles home.. it is sooo slow. Anyone got any other suggestions? I know the supercharger and intake was removed, but as long as nothing was changed on that can the t-stat really cause the supercharger not to boost all the way? The only reason I bought this car is for the speed of it. If it ran like this on the test drive I wouldn't have been so impressed with it.

    Seriously its slow now!

16 miles.. dad drove it to me and then I drove him back to pick up his car.. so it was very warmed up.. havent driven it on a cold start yet.

The boost problem has nothing to do with the thermostat either. That's a problem with the bypass valve solenoid. Make sure it's all plugged in and has a vac line running to the bottom port on the bypass valve actuator.

Thanks.. I have been talking to my dad about it and he mentioned something similar sounding to this. Or a crack in one of the vac lines. But now I have an idea of what to tell him to look for. He said he didnt know the actual name of it and would have to check alldata. He is going to check on it for me tomorrow. I would help with this stuff, but the garage where he works doesnt have an electric heater. They burn wood and have a small plug in heater around where they work. To cold for me in the winter and to many mosquitoes where they are at in the summer. I wish I had my own garage. I could help him atleast get the intake off then, but putting it back together is another thing. I haven't quite gotten that far yet to many bolts and little things to remember.

There's still plenty of fuel left after E, if you run out you'll get 17 gallons but that's not good for the fuel pump. If it's sucking gas what mileage are you getting?

About 10 miles around town. I haven't reset the button in a while though and its showing 17 from the highway driving I do. Thermostat seemed to have helped a little bit so far. Just gotta get my vac line fixed for the super charger and I will be a happy camper again. Thanks to everyone for the input. I know nothing about superchargers and how running hot or cold could affect them.
