Too cold of thermostat will not cause a misfire. Keep looking for other causes, plugs, wires, etc.
What car are we talking about? If your 98 GP was running on 7 cylinders, it's definitely not stock.![]()

Sounds like a force of habit nascar term, unless he's driving a nascar spec grand prix.
Misfires don't easily go away and can do more harm down the line. Since you have the scanner it tells you which cylinder and from there check the plugs and wires, possibly fuel injector if the first two checks didn't fix it. If it's only one cylinder misfiring then you don't have a coil problem.
