I bought the gp as a beater and it gets decent mileage. I usually avg between 18-20ish mpg. The problem is I can only get maybe 200 miles out of a tank. I hate filling up so often.

I looked up and saw that the cars came with an 18 gallon tank. Whenever I let the car run low and the fuel light comes on I dont think Ive ever put more than 12-14 gallons in.

Even if I got 15 mpg with 18 gallon tank I should be able to go 270ish on a tank. when i hit 200-220 my light comes on. Whats up? Did these cars ever come with a smaller tank for some reason?

Car is a 98 GP GT

Do you calculate ur mileage? Or go by the monitor? And yes 18 gallon tank. My moniter shows 20ish and I get like 15-16 actually

Do it on my phone everytime I gas up. No monitor for me.

Even if I only got 15-16 I should still be able to get more than 200 miles out of a tank.

My guess is the fuel gauge is off. I had a Buick once that could be bone dry, and the fuel gauge would show over ΒΌ tank.

I noticed the same thing when I bought my 03 GT 4dr. After putting almost 40,000 miles on it, I think there is more fuel in the tank than the gauge shows. I have never put in more than 15? gallons in it.

If you are dividing miles by the number of gallons at the next fill up-that is your mileage. Go as long as you want on E at your own risk.

In the mid 90's, I had a 88 Buick Regal Limited without a working odometer and fuel gauge! BAD COMBO!

I don't really know exactly how many miles I can go because my fuel gauge is broke, it works but once the gauge goes down to 1/4 it start going up until it read full. So I normally fill up when the gauge reads 1/4 just in case, I can drive 300 miles, I'm sure I can go more but I don't want to risk since the gauge don't work good

    06 is 18 just for reference^

Anyways, don't forget about the reserve on the tanks. Even when mine is almost on empty I still have 2-3 gallons left. Granted, that shouldn't matter if you calculate mpg right. After dealing with bad gas gauges in all 3 GM cars that my family owned (2000 chevy blazer, 2001 olds silhouette, and 2002 saturn L200), i wouldn't trust the gas gauge to ever be right.

I know this sounds bad but when i've been low on dough i've ran my car past E several times and still had gas to make it to work until my next paycheck came. The most i've ever put in the car was 15-16 gallons and it seemed like it took forever to fill up. The light comes on when you have drank about 12-13 gallons it seems like.

GM lists the fuel tanks to be 17.5-18 gals. Not sure if that is without the fuel pump in it. Or just the tank. Regardless, that is the size.

For me, my light comes on when I have used around 13 gallons. But I can easily keep driving and put 15 gallons in or so. The tanks have a reserve and the light comes on early so you don't run out. Typically I get 320-360 miles on a tank. I just filled up last night with gas and put in 14.3 gallons, and had 347 miles on the odometer.

Yea I forgot about the reserve. I think I may try to go a little further and see how that goes. Just not sure by how much.. Maybe ill try 250-275ish and see what happens.

??? Your tank was not completly empty? a little over 1/4? that is kinda weird, it takes more than that to get a full tank unless your tank was not low. I've put like 11 when my gas gauge shows 1/4

ok not to bump an old thread, but when I fill up my tank when my gauge is completely on E, I can never put more than 12.3 ish gallons in. If we have a 17.5 gallon tank, does that mean my gauge is essentially broken? I find it odd that my gauge will read all the way from empty to full but I can only put in 12 gallons.

    sh1t.

I've put in 16 week after week...but my buddy never puts in more than 13 gallons and he can have the light on and I'll be around an 1/8. I hate these cars.
