Hello, new to this forum and just posted this in the Intro section.....

Hello Everyone. I'm new to this forum but my wife has a 2004 Grand Prix that has a minor issue. The problem is a damp/waterstained headliner. I also have a nice rear spoiler (Black) from this car that I will post in the forsale section. It only gets a little damp after we get some heavy rain. I've done some "searching" in the forum and didn't see much info on how to get things apart, like removing the lighted sunvisors or removing the headliner entirely. I have the power sliding sunroof and not real sure how to get at the 2 rear Draintubes for the sunroof to check and clean these as well.

I suspect the drain tubes for the sunroof are clogged or blocked somehow. There is a TSB #04-08-57-007B which has a fix for this which may be what I'm seeing here. I dropped the headliner just enuff to see the drain hoses are (thankfully) still attached at the sunroof. Not sure how to completely remove the headliner since this car also has Airbag Sidecurtains and I was a little scared to pull it all apart. My guess is these Airbags are mounted to the roof and the headliner just covers them, but didn't see a need to take out the whole liner once I verified the hoses (at least at the front corners) were attached. I ran some Weed Trimmer string down both front drain tubes and they seem clear. Then "turkey Basted" some water down each side...my wife just Luvs when I use her kitchen utenzils :>) One side pored straight to the ground and the other side just trickled out so I suspect this is the culprit. I'm getting ready to remove the pass. Kickpanel to fix the drainhose as per the TSB. Few questions though......

    1) How do you disconnect the sunvisors with power? I pulled them down and expected to see a plug but it was a solid wire going toward the sunroof motor. I don't want to have to cut these to get them out. Maybe I didn't drop the headliner enuff to see the connectors but was afraid to bend the cardboard backer for the headliner.

    2) If I do what to take out the headliner with Airbag Side Curtains in the roof, what is the procedure to do this and how do you get it out of the car??

    3) How do you remove the glass assembly?? When this is slid back, it covers the back corners making it difficult to get access to the rear drain tubes.

Thank you for any input you could offer and Happy New Year!!

I think I fixed it, just waiting for a heavy rain to see. I was able to run heavy weed trimmer line down the hoses and they weren't clogged. I just think the hose ends needed to be modded as per the GM TSB.

I would recommend that everyone do the TSB mod since it is so simple. Just pull off the kick panels and you should see a Black Rubber Hose about 1/2" thick going down into the front fender well. When you pour water in at the corners it should run out onto the ground at the rocker panel below the door jam. It was just trickling out on the pass. side and this is where the headliner got wet/stained.

The TSB just has you cut the end of the hose at an angle so it cant lay flat against something and restrick the water flow. As soon as I did this, the water just flowed right out and never backed up in the Sunroof Channel. Just used a little OxyClean on the Stain and it's gone :>)

BTW - I have the sliding sunroof that when open, slides back over the outside of the roof of the car. Anyone no how to seperate the glass from the tracks so I can get at the back drains a little easier?

Do you have OnStar? Some people here with an 04+ said that the OnStar antenna lets water drip onto the headliner. The fix is to remove the antenna and silicone it, then replace it.

I bet ya a dollar its the on star antenna or the satelitte antenna. I had to fix this same problem on an 04 CompG. Just pull the antennas, put RTV on both sides of the "gasket", bolt on, wipe off and extra. I used grey water pump RTV, hasn't leaked again in 2 years and it sits outside too.

Very common problem on the 04+ GPs

Iron Indian - You owe me a $1. My car does not have On-Star. I do feel the problem was with the Sunroof Draintube. When I put water in the Sunroof Channel it would just tricle out at the Rocker panel to the ground. Did the mod per the TSB and now the water pours out as quick as I put it into the Sunroof channel. Where as before, it would backup in the sunroof channel before I did the modification to the drain hose.

I'll gladly give you that $1 back if you can tell me how to remove the Sunroof Glass from the sliding assembly

You have NO antenna on your roof? I don't think i've EVER seen an 04+ GP w/o one or both antennas. No XM either I take it?

As for the sunroof, I have no idea, never pulled one on mine muchless an 04+. Should be easy enough though.

Well I've pulled the sunroof on an 01 GP. Might be the same thing, might not be, worth a try.

Ok have your sunroof down, and then press the up button once to get it up. Now there should be 6 screws (on mine at least..) holding the glass to the mechanism. There should be 3 on the right side and 3 on the left side. The screws on mine were a star bit. Find a bit that fits and unscrew each screw. You might have to move the sunroof back a bit by pressing the back button to move it to access the one that's farthest toward the front. After these six are out you can go from the outside of the car and lift the glass up.

I would double check for you on my dad's 04 but he doesn't have sunroof on his. Hopefully it's the same on 04's+ as it is on the 97-03's
