ive used the search, no results and i wasnt about to search maf and go through all the threads so...

will a 99 maf sensor from a gtp work on my 97 gtp?

mine isnt necessarily bad but it has a crack on top plastic, looks someone hit it with a hammer... is it necessary to replace?

No it will not fit. 97-98 used different MAF sensors.

It will only fit if you drill a new opening in the throttle body and remove the center post. The 99+ MAF is very, very different.

well, im thinking from the perspective of having both MAFs in a 99+ throttle body. ive switched back and forth that way without much problem, but yes, you cant use it the other way around. that was my mistake.

    The MAF is the same.

Edit, scratch that. I know they're the same on the 99+, but I'm not so sure on the 97-98. Sorry.
