Thread: Car Cutting out

i am having troubles with my car cutting out i will just be coasting down a road and then it dies, then when i go to crank it, it won't start unless i let it sit for a minute then it starts right back up and idea's what it could be? Also i am not throwing any codes

i fuel pump kicks on, but i do not know how old the fuel filter is it came with the car.....but saying that i am going to go pick one up right about now, could it be a ground problem.... all the sensors are good, and when it cuts out it just goes from running to died all the lights come on i loose my powerstreering, etc...... maybe a loose battery connection... im not really to great with eletrical problems, if thats what it is

ok cleaned the under the hood fuse box up all fuses checked out fine on the battery the negative was a tad loose and on the positive it was as tight as could be but had some corrosion on it which i cleaned up also i think that my pcn was touching my body i don't know if that could have caused it.....? i am going to check it out drive it around for a while and pick up a fuel filter.....but another question where is the fuel filter located i traced the lines but they go behind the engine where i could not see.... i will post my results after the test drive and let everyone know if the problem is fixed

well i drove the same route i figured that would be my best bet and no cutting out occuried so i think i might be good to go...... i should have remembered that the fuel filter is under the car i use to drive a cavalier.....is it near the fuel tank? also when i went to pick up a filter i was going to buy some spark plugs but i didn't know which ones where the best to run any feedback on that topic?

Just to add to what has already been said, you may want to run your car up to Autozone or any other parts store. They will usually pull any codes from the PCM and that may give you an idea where to look.

So you know you have basically 2 types of codes.

Major code will trip the SES light imediately

Minor code will NOT trip the SES light unless the same code shows up within so many engine cycles.

All codes, no matter what kind will stay stored in the PCM until they are removed manually.

Take note of when the car cuts out, such as when you hit a bump, make a left turn, right turn, etc.

Sorry, got busy at work so I was delayed a bit in posting. Glad to hear you may have it fixed. You cant miss the fuel filter, just look under the car on the drivers side where the door meets the rear quater pannel. Its about 18 inches in.

ok fuel filter sucessfully replaced, i have the old one draining into a jar, an old trick that i learned in school to see how dirty the gas was in the filter that was going into the engine, and as going about to autolite 104's does AutoZone or Advanced Auto or hell even wal mart sell these?

All of those places sell them. I know for fact Wal-Mart does as thats where I usually pick up Autolites from.

how can i tell if they are 104's i already know that they are the autolite copper core but there are 104's 103's and something eles, also do they come gaped? sry for sounding like a total newbie but i was really want to make sure that i do everything right for this car because of my love for it

They will have the number 104 stamped on the ceramic portion of the plug and they do not come pre-gapped.

ok cool thanks for all the help, i'm leaving now to go get some, o but while i got someone here to talk to what about oil filters any feed back on what you think is the best, i ussually go with mobile one oil filters

LOL. Well lets say that is a subject near and dear to my heart. But for the sake of time and starting a long debate, stick with the Mobil 1 filters. They are a little more costly than others but do a decent job in filtering the oil.

O best working gap for sparkplugs? i dont have any major engine mods done so.....

I'll tread lightly and say there are better filters out there, but for the sake of convenience, keep using the Mobil 1's for now. The more focus you put on keeping the oil clean via filtration the better off you and your engine will be.
