I have a 2004 gt and it keeps telling me to check the gas cap. I have replaced it thinking that the cap was bad, but I have put an autozone gas cap and a cap from a pontiac dealer on it but it still reads check the gas cap. I dont smell gas under the car and the hose clamps I can see for the filler are tight.I have also hooked it up to a code reader and nothing about fuel, just a coolant sensor witch I replaced. I have to take it through emissions and I know with the car reading that It will not pass. please help

It says it in the dic? There is a leak somewhere in the evap system whether it is a bad gas cap or a leak elsewhere.

Thanks that was what I was thinking but I hoped this was more of a common problem and someone would have an easy fix. I cant find anything obvious so I guess I will have to get it smoke tested.

its most liklely the vent solenoid located behind the rear quarter panel around the gas filler, its only about a 30 dollar part new that you can change very easily yourself. A very common problem on alot of these vehicles. Another option is cleaning your old one and trying your luck, you do this by removing it, apllying power to it and cleaning the rubber youll see inside...I would say its best to just replace it for the low cost of it.
