The only thing that comes to mind would be the CV axle grease. What color is the grease you are seeing? If its a putrid green, its likely axle grease and means your boot is torn or its not sealed properly.

the grease that came from my stock cv boot showed up as brown/tannish on the underside of my hood and I think it was green in the boot. Jack up the car and check the cv boots for tears. The stuff from the motor mount is not thick at all. It has a consistancy of milk...kinda I am willing to bet a beer inner cv boot because of the location.

I just did my passenger side 2 months ago, but I've done two previosely on other cars I owned. It is a bit labor intensive. The color of the grease splatters under my hood and firewall on my GTP was also tan/brown. I couldn't see the tear on my boot even when it was removed unless I pinched the boot just right to expose it, so looking under the car may not show it but you should see grease on the boot somewhere.
To do the repair you'll neen to remove the wheel, caliper, tie-rod end, lower ball joint, sway bar end link, seperate the spindle from the axle, and I would suggest purchasing a front axle puller with slide hammer. I've seperated the axle from the transmission in the past using a block of wood and a nail bar, but the puller works sweet! If you're interested in where I bought the puller let me know. I think it cost $35 for the puller tool and I already had a slide hammer. It's always a great education trying something new in the repair department. I can give you a better step-by-step if you need. Enjoy fixing it yourself, the joy usually comes after it's running again.

The symptoms are grease splattered under hood, at firewall and globs down near the boot at the frame. If enough grease is lost eventually the joint will start to fail and you'll hear a clunking noise while making sharp turns. I don't know about the tranny not having reverse. Sometimes unrelated faults appear at the same time and tend to confuse troubleshooting. Mike and Scotty are very good sources for this issue also.

Has anyone installed a split boot? How well did it go? Sure beats removing the axle and all.

    Bump...

Also curious what the best grease is to replace it with. Does it have to say "CV Joint Grease" on the package, or will any high-temp auto grease from Walmart work fine?

I appreciate the advice, and I promise you, if I had $80 I'd go for the new axle. I honestly just don't have that kind of money to spend right now.

Really? I was afraid once all the grease leaked out the joint would fail. That's actually why I was asking about if Walmart "Supertech" grease would be ok. I had already bought a split-boot, but when I realized I'd have to wait a few days to install it, I went ahead and refilled the leaking boot with the grease that came in the package with the split-boot. I just need new grease now.
