Top swap. Higher compression. If you don't get it you'll kick yourself later.

Get a '97 GTP Engine AND Transmission...top swapping a '97 GT is uber fail...it'll kill the transmission in a week or two.

Can't quite agree with Bluey on this one.

The 4T60 isn't really weaker than the 4T65. It's a huge heat generator though. (no, I'm not a 60 fan)

If you top swap, tuning is the key to it holding up. Lots and lots of tuning. An L67 swap will be more lenient tune wise. The added power from the top swap is nice, but the tuning responsibility needs to be taken into account.
I drink..so consider that when reading my posts.

Usually I'd say topswap because of the higher compression, but if it's a 97 I would say 1998+ GTP engine and tranny.
    1998 GP GT - Topswap - Ported M90 - N* - 4" FWI - Poly Mounts - 3" DP - 180 Tstat - Alt. Rewire - 3.29 gearing - Full Exhaust - Custom Tune

Keep in mind, IIRC early 97 GTs had the 4T60-E, later 97s had the 4T65-E which is what was used the rest of the years. Need to figure out what tranny you have...
